Research..implications?

oh hey guys! yall heard of basic science? whats the deal with it anyway? like some of it just seems to be pulled out of the blue almost.

For example:

"Experiments in Plant Hybridization" by some mendel dude

"Cross-species induction of luminescence in the quorum-sensing bacterium Vibrio harveyi" by some bassler chick

I guess this mostly applies to micro/plant research. It's just that when you compare this to research in clinical trials it seems to pale in comparison in terms of importance. Wouldn't we be better off if dudes like mendel and chicks like bassler focused on correlation studies for big pharma instead of ****ing around with peas and germs?

So what is the importance of some of these types of research?

Firstly, what a ridiculously narrow-minded post.

Secondly, I'm not sure what you're trying to do(seeing as how you just posted essentially the same thing twice in a row, under two account names), if you you're trying to promote something, if you're a kid in high school trying to get answers for some project, i dunno... but what are you saying? That scientific research should be confined to medicine?

And if your post is actually serious... Mendel's research on plant hybridization founded the basis of our knowledge of trait inheritance and subsequently, genetics...

that said, I'm guessing you're a troll... but I don't even see how a thread like this could entertain a troll, so i dunno

Actually, her reply was to my original question (the other topic) and I guess my question was a bit arrogant

how about you read some of those journal articles and realize what the importance of those are. you MUST be in highschool because you don't realize how important the contribution of mendel's pea plants were to the study of genetics. you need to look at the BROADER concept of what these studies mean, rather than focusing on the superficial details

there's a lot you need to learn about science my friend

well u can't have breakthroughs all the time but researchers do need to make a living ===> lots of useless research out there.

Yeah, and just think of what could happen if all those scientific minds didn't have legitimate research to keep them out of trouble.

What appears "useless" in the present may end up Nobel Prize worthy in the future based on where technology takes us. We don't always have the foresight to see the long-term implications of our findings.

Ex. Studying fluorescent proteins in Jellyfish....later on yielded FISH and fluorescence microscopy techniques to follow protein transport...Nobel Prize won (2008 I believe).

or how bout studying giant squid axons? quite random but is now the basis of most knowledge about neurons (and another nobel prize)
