Cnussey
The NOSM class profile has the average class age of 26. Does anyone know how this compares to the other schools? The reason I'm asking is that I am just turning 22 and had heard that NOSM prefers their students 'older' and that there were very few 22 year olds ever accepted. I interviewed there and it went really well, but this has me worried a bit. ...and May 15th is a LONG ways away. He, he. Don't fret over your age. 26 is the average--not the cutoff If you came across as mature and responsible, I'm sure your age won't matter.
Tango Charlie
As long as you don't act like the typical 22-year-old I'm sure you'll be fine. edit: Also I seem to recall a gray-haired, probably in his 40's student from NOSM hitching a ride on an ambulance with us last year. In know some of the other students look like they're in their 30's as well. So maybe it's just a couple much older students bumping up the average. Cnussey
C'mon now, Cnussey, you know you're a unique snowflake. You always make me giggle TC. Lol. I'm one of those older applicants that make everyone look younger though....LOL....got IDed again today. How many bottles of wine do I need to buy before that woman remembers me? Tango Charlie
You're approaching it from the wrong direction. The ticket is to buy enough bottles of wine so that you don't remember her. See, Cnussey? It's all up here, in Mr. Charlie's noggin. This is why they pay me the big bucks (plus bus fare).

medgoal
There's quite a few people in the e2009 class who are straight out of undergrad, or with 1 or 2 years post-graduate work. There's also a few middle aged people who tend to skew the average. That being said, I have heard that the e2009 class is actually "young" compared to previous years. I don't think age matters so much, as actual maturity and life experience is what counts. Good Luck
NorthernDude
There are many students in the most recent two entries who were 21 or 22 when they got in. There also tend to be a number of people in their mid-twenties, and then a handful of older mature students. Regardless of how old you are, you have an equal shot. Northerndoc
Hi.. in support of your age all classes have had from all ends of the spectrum. The charter class average age was 29 but there is also the discussion that given the need to live away from TBay/Sudbury for 8 months those who are older in age are more likely to be married and have children complicating this move and increasing stresses on the school/so students so a move to a younger and perhaps less "complicated socially" group has some benefits. This is not meant as age discrimination just learning that i think that the school is doing... I think they are just looking for people to make good doctors for Northern Ontario and underserviced populations.
benhc911
thats good to hear... since I'm only 20. I always suspected that there was a slight, although likely subconcious, discrimination against certain age groups at some schools. I feel that, for example, being 19 at the time weakened my uOttawa application, despite good academics and ECs (although I suppose being a 3rd year will make it harder regardless of your age?). I think that most schools want to avoid young applicants, unless they are so abnormally young (12 year old prodigies?) that it would make for good PR... but even that seems unlikely in Canada... and applicants that are of an age such that the length of their time practicing will be significantly reduced (40 for example). It's unfortunate that heuristics play such a huge role in the selection process... but then again the alternative would be a longer, more complex, application process I suppose.
