charmer08
Any thoughts on this? Should i take the mcat after taking ochem II? or will i be fine if i've taken ochem I? Thanksssss!!!!
UTPEOPLE
if you miss ochem II, you wont learn about aldol condensation, which is the SINGLE MOST COMMONLY tested orgo concept. If you can brush up on it by yourself, then probably it will be fine. The trinity of sna/sn2, stereochemistry and aldol make up 80% of tested material, but you will be boned on the odd question about wittig reactions. Also, I thought med schools needed a full year of o chem as pre-req? how can you get away with not taking ochem?

HBP
You'll be OK without a prep course and just reading prep material.
nemesis
...Also, I thought med schools needed a full year of o chem as pre-req? how can you get away with not taking ochem? At least in Ontario, there isn't a single medical school that requires organic chemistry as a prerequisite course for admission.

UTPEOPLE
yep uhm i gave princeton review a call and they said orgo is a small portion of the mcat... anyone know how small? lol it is small, 25%, but remember that it is also the section that separates the 12's from the 15's, and everyone wants that 15, right? What program are you in? I'm assuming that you are in u of t?

astrogirl
I took the MCAT with no organic chem except for the little bit that we learn in high school in Alberta, one semester of bio 10 years ago, and one semester of chem 10 years ago. I did have a lot of physics classes, though. I read a lot of books, did a lot of practice, didn't take a prep course, and ended up with an 11 on BS and a 13 on PS. Aww... but I love u of t... and they were generous with their wallets with me, so I had no reason to decline anyway, good luck with that verbal. Would mac be your first choice then? AND DONT SETTLE for 12 in bio, go for that 15, if only for bragging rights!

astrogirl
I used Organic Chemistry for Dummies, Chemistry for Dummies, Biology for Dummies, and my textbook from my one biology class to teach myself the concepts. Then I worked through the Examkrackers 1001 questions books for each of those three subjects.

charmer08
Hey charmer, how's o-chem at york? Especially during the summer session? lol i've heard its horrible... thats why im not taking it this summer everyone who took it last summer said its brutal and inspite of the average being really low, the grades werent adjusted... the same prof is teaching it this summer just so you know, people exaggerate stuff and sometimes they dont even know what they are talking about (eg. volunteering is a requirement for medschools rofl), I think... so take the advice with some thought... there are always some ppl that end up getting an A and i guess there views might be different about the course... the reason im not taking it this summer is cuz i`ve already lost 1200 bucks by dropping the course this year and I just didn`t want to take the risk and end up dropping it again lol
lovestruck
I haven't taken the MCAT (doing that this summer) and I did take orgo 1 and 2, but I can tell you that from all the research I've done about taking a prep course vs. not taking a prep course, it only seems to be worth it if you need the help/review in all the subject matter covered for the MCAT. So if you just need orgo chem (or physics like me) but your good for all the other subjects, that is only one small part of the $2000+ course and it will not really help you more than some serious studying on your own will. The Kaplan guy, Princeton review guy and many other course people I talked to actually agreed on this with me. The only benefit of the course is if you need a overall review of the material, are not the type that can study independently and access to all the practice tests (which can be bought separately or if you're lucky from me, given to you by a friend who took the MCAT beforehand). Good luck!

I'm currently waitlisted for that course...but I don't think it's gonna be any better taking it at my school either. A few of my buddies dropped the second half this term, and for those who stuck with it have been constantly complaining to me about how disastrous their final exam went... What's the prof's name? It wasn't listed on the course timetable.
