GenGal27
Hi, Could someone please tell me what the approximate time commitment per week is during a family medicine residency, including call, clinic, studying, etc? I am trying to figure out when would be the best time to have a child and it would really help if I had an idea of the demands of residency. How does it compare to the clerkship years? Thanks! Lactic Folly
Quite a few women have children during residency as there is paid maternity leave (none later when you work fee-for-service). As you know, hours are highly dependent on the rotation, which I think would be a much greater determinant of one's schedule than whether one is a clerk or resident. Perhaps one of the FM residents can chime in here.
koppertone
I don't know any residents who had children without taking extensive maternity leave. It depends where you're doing your residency, but given that you rotate through many of the core subjects that you do in clerkship, expect similar hours. (ie. 1 in 4 call on Obs and surgery and 60-80h weeks during the same).
