mermaid
I just found out today that a job I thought I had a lock on, was given to someone else. I guess I had put all my eggs in one basket because this job seemed so certain in my communications from the start with the supervisor, and now I'm a bit shocked... and out of work! What's a soon-to-be-grad to do so late in the game for summer work, besides waitress? Any suggestions (outrageous/sensible/anywhere in between) welcome! leap87
Take a look at hospital websites - they usually offer some good positions with good pay.... It really depends on what your studies were in, but either way, you should be able to get a pretty good position within a hospital...

My first thoughts were, "bow chicka wah wah, I guess you can work anywhere you want then" ... Anyways. If you search, maybe you can find another lab to work in? I always assumed that no research grant = no money = no work, but I suppose right now I can't lose... It can't hurt. I know, for example, my lab periodically looks for post-docs and graduate students. Just e-mail a bunch of researchers, I'm sure somebody is looking! soggybread
I'd work at a summer camp if contacting labs give you no success. It's always fun (as long as you like kids).

Sface
you should check out camp trillium - i volunteered there one year and it was crazy fun. also a lot of YMCA overnight camps hire premed students to be camp nurses or "health supervisors" so you could check that out too. maybe look into u of t science and engineering outreach camp, i think theyre going to be hiring summer instructors soon

anastomosis
Hope you find a place in another lab at your centre. People talk, so you would probably have an easier time finding another spot in your research centre, then some where else. You could also consider teaching English overseas. A couple of my lab mates did it and thoroughly enjoyed it, meeting new people, experiencing another culture, making a load of cash, and then applied for another research position while teaching. It really depends on what your studies were in, but either way, you should be able to get a pretty good position within a hospital... I agree with this, but I'd like to point out that it doesn't just apply to lab positions. My older sister was in a similar position as you last summer. She had been accepted into med, but lost a summer position in a lab. She thought she would fall back on teaching an MCAT course for PR, but my brother suggested she apply to a hospital. She got a job as a ward clerk (basically an administrative position working closely with nurses and docs) in the emerg dept at a downtown hospital. It was a well-paying job, but brutal hours (because she was new and had no seniority, she had to work many of the 11:30pm-7:30am shifts). At the end though, she was really glad to do it because of all the connections she made. She frequently came into contact with a lot of ER docs and specialists who would be her attendings during clinicals, and apparently when they found out she was bound for med, they got to really know her. One of the ER docs she worked with already got her a great plastics shadowing experience last winter break. Point is, working in a hospital is typically good money, and decent for making connections. Sometimes you do have to work brutal hours, but it depends on what depts you choose to work in (ex: ER has rough hours). Just throwing it out there as an option.
