Applying To US DO Med Schools - FAQs, Guidance & Canadian Friendly Schools

Recommended Posts

CMG first iteration in ON, QC, BC

IMG 2nd iteration in Alberta and also have to be Alberta resident.

I wouldn't say its just as easy to come back as a US MD just because we don't have access to all of Canada. But much easier than the IMGs.

Then what does this mean (from your first post):

"As I said, ensuring success when attending a "out of Canada" med school means to maximize your chances to MATCH IN A US ACGME RESIDENCY (Canadian residencies will be a crap shot)."

Exactly what it says. What part is confusing?

This search took an entire 5 minutes. Every student who chooses to enter into an osteopathic medical school should know (and inherently accept) that there are pseudoscientific portions to their medical degree.

Now excuse me while I go to study real medicine.

The article names are:

- Cranial osteopathy, delusion or reality?

- Why Cranial Therapy Is Silly

- INTEREXAMINER RELIABILITY AND CRANIAL OSTEOPATHY

- Craniosacral Therapy Is Not Medicine

- A systematic review of craniosacral therapy: Biological plausibility, assessment reliability and clinical effectiveness

- Dubious Aspects of Osteopathy --- where 1/3 of the "article" was talking about cranial osteopathy - also badly written with lots of opinion masquerading as facts with no citation whatsoever.

So you see a pattern here - your beef is with Cranial Osteopathy. All the articles you found had issues with cranial osteopathy.

So.. the other OMT you learn, as pertaining to the rest of body, is A OK?

In your 4 years of DO school, in all the DO schools, there's maybe at most 4-5 schools that spend any significant amount of time on Cranial. Most schools don't even teach this stuff, and allow the students to read up on it on their own for purposes of board exams.

You are blowing this thing way out of proportion. This is one of those things where you can go read up on if there's an interest, or totally ignore when you disagree with it.

Now, this isn't the first time you've brought to attention your displeasure with being "forced" to learn "pseudoscience" that is "cranial osteopathy". Whining about it on this forum with every chance you get is not going to give you the excuse to not learn OMT in your DO school, no matter how much of a MD you think you are. The sooner you accept this fact, the better off you'll be.

I just concentrated on the most questionable parts of the DO curriculum, OMM is less questionable but still very suspect in relation to the basic sciences.

What you're also forgetting to mention is the fact that, however insignificant you deem cranial therapy to be, it IS tested on the boards. So, clearly, the powers that be with the DO world think it's important enough.

Out of the 400 COMLEX step 1 questions, I had 1 or 2 questions regarding Cranial osteopathy. It involved the axis of motion of the cranial bones. Seems pretty insignificant to me.

This part is confusing me: Canadian residencies will be a crap shot).

But you said DOs enter the same applicant pool / 1st iteration as CMGs when applying to Canadian residencies

Thanks

Ok I see what you mean. Perhaps "craps shot" is too strong a term. Yes you enter into 1st iteration, but its still going to be "hard" to actually match (i.e. Nothing is guaranteed.)

I don't have a ton of numbers or stats to back that up, its mostly a hunch from experience and hearing other people's experience.

I don't remember exactly how I filled the semester hours on my application, I think I just put it as is. 3 credits for 1 semester courses and 6 credits for 2 semester courses (my school uses the same system).

As for English requirement. I didn't take English, but I took philosophy and that satisfied the English requirement.

Can you elaborate on why it will be hard to match? Assuming good board scores and references of course, is it because we are DO and are disadvantaged because most canadian schools don't know DO and would rather take IMG from

Ireland in 2nd round coz its more known? Otherwise why wouldnt we have the same chance as something with a MD from the US?

thanks for the response.

also, how realistic is it to apply in third year with a 3.8ish GPA and 30+ MCAt and be accepted for matriculation without having to complete the degree in 4th year? any schools that specifically allow for this? of course assuming an ontario med school does not accept me.

You have to have graduated before matriculation.

Lol.. I just said in my previous post that you will match easier than the IMGs. Quit freaking out.

Matching in Canada is harder for the US MDs too, the reason is because you went to a none Canadian MD school.

Lol thanks. Not freaking out, as long as we have equal chance as us md to match in Canada, that's all I care about

NOVA..100% rejection

Touro..depends on your bio/interview date..

a +12-13 automatic interview

i recommend retakes....you need to get a gpa and mcat higher...focus on your weak section..probably easiest to get up..

add another 2-3 points ot a 27-28 and a 3.3-3.4 with retakes...you will get in (again probably not NOVA..lol)

Hey my bad if this has been answered before, but I'm really interested in applying broadly to canadian friendly DO schools next cycle and I just want to know if Organic Chem and English are necessary. I have all other prereqs completed, and I also have a social science course, and humanities course that both had essay components. Also I have biochem as well but no orgo. I really wanna use next summer to write the MCAT and not take those courses! Just wanna know if they will allow this. Thanks

No offense but this can be checked by going to the individual schools website. There is this amazing site called google that gives answers to these kind of question. Damn some people are lazy!

Lol, I checked individual schools, and most of them have english and organic chem listed as prereqs, and they also state that they make exceptions on an individual basis. And ye I've heard of google (Is it possible to not know google and know premed101? hmmm??), I used it but didnt get my answers so I posted my question here. I wanted to know if anyone has gotten into a DO school without those 2 prereqs given my situation. It would be better for you to not be judgmental, assume **** and call me lazy. No offense taken, your not the first or last of your kind.

when school starts and you havent they will kick you out...
