Premed prereq's: UTSG summer Orgo vs UTSC orgo

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I'll be entering second year at UTSC soon, and am pursuing medicine. I have most of the prereqs(biology, and chem), however, I still need organic and physics.

I've decided to either take both organic I and II during the summer at UTSG, or take Org I during the winter semester at UTSC, and take Org II during the summer.

Any recommendations on course of action? In terms of difficulty, professors, etc would be greatly appreciated.

Also, in terms of physics, would I be completely screwed if I avoided physics, and just learned it on my own from MCAT prep material? I have no experience with it (highschool or university). I've also been notified that most of the physics covered in the MCAT is highschool level material, soo... would it be advisable to perhaps take physics 11/12 ILC(independent learning) courses during the summer instead of university-level physics?

Thank you all , and I apologize if a similar thread has already been posted.

EDIT: If I was to take Org in the winter sem at UTSC, should I make use of the credit/no credit option, to potentially save my GPA? Chemistry isn't exactly my strong suit. Thanks!

Organic II is definitely harder than Organic I at UTSC I can tell you that for certain. There are simply a LOT of reactions you'll need to know, however the labs I had were pretty interesting I think and the professor (Lana) was REALLY good in my opinion. The final exam had something like 30 reactions + 5 longer mechanisms to it in addition to 1-2 pages of more stuff (HNMR, IR etc.)

You may want to consider the credit/no credit option for this if you're weak in chemistry since this is an innately tough course with a C- course average.

DEFINITELY do not take it at UTSG - within the year OR in the summer. just trust me. stay away. i would say for all the stuff UTSG is infamous for, the chem department is the worst. averages can be as low as D or C-. MURDER i tell you. CHM247 at UTSG (orgo 2) there were 200 (TWO HUNDRED) to remember for the final exam. no i'm not joking. just stay away, lol, if you told any UTSG student you were considering coming there just for the orgo classes they'd think you were joking, lol

Oh come on... 247 isnt THAT bad.... if you just remember that nucleophiles attack electrophiles, you can basically figure out reaction mechs on the fly. :P Although having to NAME the reactions was a *****
