Easier Medicine Schools To Get Into

Recommended Posts

Ok, that's fine, so you guys don't buy that first choice % match doesn't tell you a lot about a school. How about another set of statistics? How about, we look at the number of students that went UNMATCHED. These are the students that spent 4 years in medical school, but for one reason or another, were UNABLE to get a residency spot.

2010:

2nd lowest Sherbrooke is at 6.8% with 13 unmatched (Lowest = Calgary at 12 unmatched - 8.6%)

2009:

Lowest is Sherbrooke at 8.6% with 13 unmatched (2nd = Montreal, 17 unmatched (6.6%)

4th lowest is Sherbrooke with 8 unmatched at 5.4% (Lowest = Montreal (14/6.2%) and Manitoba (13/14.8%))

2007:

Lowest is Sherbrooke at 10.6% with 13 unmatched (2nd Lowest = McGill 12/9.7%)

Again, I try to support my claims with statistics and I agree, they may not paint a complete picture. However, when you see that a certain school in Canada is continuously at the bottom when it comes to the amount of students that actually match to their choice of residency, as well as in the number of students that DO NOT get to practice medicine, you have to be pretty dense not to recognize that something is up. I know, there might be an off year here and there, and some students might be gunning for competitive specialties and have to settle for 2nd/3rd choice, but come on! Using tax-payer money on a tenth of your class only to have them twiddling thumbs for at least a year doesn't sit well with me.

Wait...what??

Did you forget about the second iteration?

In the end, only 2 grads won't be entering residency next year. That's about one percent.

That's the same as Montreal and Toronto and better than Calgary.

By your criteria Calgary is the worst with 2% of it's graduating class twiddling their thumbs next year. That's double the percentage of Sherbrooke.

And the match is much more candidate dependant than school dependant.

Yes Sherbrooke as a piss-poor matching rate but it's still a good school. Grads make fine doctors.

The main reason we do so badly in the match is the way our rotations are set-up: we only have two months of elective before the CaRMS deadline and it's at the beginning of clerkship so it's hard to make a good impression.

We are aware of that fact and complain each year.
