lifestyle after residency as a consultant

Recommended Posts

Hi I'm a 3rd year medical student and I'm trying to figure out what specialty to get into...I finished my surgery rotation and I really liked it. I can definitely see myself being happy in surgery as a career, however, I am worried about the lifestyle part of it. I think of myself as a family guy, and I don't think I want to give up my family for my career. I know that life during residency will suck no matter what, but what are my options regarding working hours as a consultant? Will it be possible for me to set my own hours in a community practice ... something like 60 hours/week? any info will be appreciated.
