Choosing referees

For choosing referees (in my case for UBC), does it absolutely have to be the types like instructors/dentists, etc or is it okay if they're not?

simple answer is no...I think a lot of schools specify them to be professors who have taught u or someone who was in a position to mentor u etc, someone of a higher authority like ur research supervisor or something. some schools go further by saying no friends, no family members.
