alamatti
Hi, I'm a resident in a surgical specialty and over the past year I've found out that my choice of residency is not all that suitable for me anymore. Mostly due to lifestyle issues but also the fact that I feel that I'm losing my general medicine skills (I may have been a generalist personality than a specialist personality after all). I'm thinking about switching into emergency medicine as a PGY-1. Do you know whether this happens at all since I know that emerg is pretty competitive. Thanks. Lactic Folly
Well, it depends if that program has space and is willing to take you. The only way to find out is to try.
Ollie
That might be tough seeing as how most emerg programs are pretty small. The place to start is to contact the program director and find out if they have space. Your back-up plan could be to switch to family medicine and apply for the EM year. alamatti
Is there anyone on this forum that has personally been able to switch out to emergency medicine from another residency or heard of anyone who has done that? Just so that I know that it has been done before and that I'm not looking for the impossible to happen. thnx.
Lactic Folly
Yes, I've seen it happen. No switch is technically impossible - it entirely depends on the circumstances involved.
Check1
I know there are a bunch of residents who transferred from other programs into the emerg program in Edmonton, & at least one in BC. Don't know about any other programs though. Talk to the PD.
