benhc911
I have a somewhat general question about the impact of summer classes on the different medical schools and applications therein... First off a brief cover of my gpa so far: 11 classes first year with a omsas 4pt of 3.78ish 9 classes second year with 3.87 12 classes third year with 3.97 so far However I'm taking 3 more courses this summer. I'm in chemical engineering and had to push my schedule around in order to get the med school prereqs and still be able to graduate next year (I'll need 13 more courses next year, and the three this summer). For the summer I am taking chem eng classes, and expect to get A+ on two of them... But the third is engineering law and the prof is a one of those who says good job and gives you a 75 on the midterm (worth 40% of the final mark). This is really unfortunate as it seems unlikely I could do anything better than an A-, or B+ and I'm afraid of the potential impact of a lower mark (B etc). Since it's a summer class, and I only have three of them, taken in a year where I already had 12 classes... How would these classes affect my application to different schools? I'm applying this fall, so these marks are included right? Any advice or insight is appreciated! As an aside I'm under a nserc usra right now doing research in addition to these classes, last year I went to Africa for a month with a charitable organization I've worked with for years (cofounding the project)... And I've done lots of conference work, but minimal other ECs (sailing competitions, tutoring etc). Thanks
mattg
it will count for a couple of the schools (i think maybe Mac and Queens, but i'm not sure)... regardless, i wouldn't worry about a B+ among 14 other A and A+'s for the year - it won't have that strong of an impact... and if you can get an A-, I especially wouldn't worry about it btw, you're a beast, going to have averaged 12 classes/year by the end... too bad you only took 9 in 2nd year though
astrogirl
Many schools actually don't even consider summer classes in your GPA, they just count it as having the pre-req done. And one B or B+ is really not going to impact your GPA that much for the schools that do count them, so I don't think you need to worry about it. DOC_Ma
Most don't care about your Summer classes. So they won't be included in your GPA. You overloaded like mad man. But unfortunately u didnt take a full load in second year so no weighting formula for u from uoft.

I was very stressed and approaching burnout at the time, and was preparing for the organization to go to Africa... So I really couldn't handle it all at the time. Since then I've turned up the academics, but had to turn down the ECs to match... Without the weighting you speak of, how would my uoft chances fair? I thought full time was just 4 classes per semester... Or else I would have maybe forced myself more... Especially since my 4th year will be anything but easy lol:rolleyes:
oto
Also, if the option is ever considered, international schools look at summer classes. (states)
