gb35
Hey all, Can anyone provide me with a history of the WS cutoffs at Western? I know it was P last year, and Q the year before that, but I can't find anything older. What do you folks think, any chance of an R this year? I know, I know, pointless speculation. All of us writing tomorrow will just get T's and not have to worry (fingers crossed haha).

All of us writing tomorrow will just get T's and not have to worry (fingers crossed haha). It has never been higher than Q and it has generally been a P in the past. Not that the past is that good of a guideline but I doubt it would jump to a R. That would have it jumping 2 levels in one go.
gb35
Haha perfect. Again, I know it's pointless speculation, but the WS is the one section that has me worried for tomorrow!!
HBP
I remember last year everyone was saying they really doubt VR would be 11...
gb35
True, at least VR isn't subjective though. Seems so sketchy to have a high, firm cutoff for WS when it's marked by a person.
rmorelan
I remember last year everyone was saying they really doubt VR would be 11... yup, and I was one of those persons and I was wrong. The 11 was out of the blue and didn't mesh with the history even remotely. Plus the requirement dropped in literally every other way except VR. This is one crazy game and last year western was crazier than most. That being said I still doubt that the WS will move to an R. There would be some "interesting" debates if that was the case
RandomGuy
Remember that an R will likely help you for Queen's, though.
nemesis
Yeah, it was the WS=R+VR=11 combo that iced many otherwise qualified candidates, this past cycle. You definitely wanna aim to crush those two section in particular, but scoring less in either VR or WS isn't the end of your entire medical school application. Remember that an R will likely help you for Queen's, though.
__sadboy15
I've heard that the VR jumped to 11 to decrease the proportion of out of SWOMEN applicants getting interviews, and thus leave more space for SWOMEN interviewees Any one else hear this or have any thoughts? HBP
I doubt it. They maintain their SWOMEN quota regardless of what happens to the non-SWOMEN'ers. They may have wanted to decrease the total number of interviews though.
RandomGuy
I've heard that the VR jumped to 11 to decrease the proportion of out of SWOMEN applicants getting interviews, and thus leave more space for SWOMEN interviewees Any one else hear this or have any thoughts? There's no evidence to support that - sounds like idle speculation from some (understandably upset) non-SWOMENers with a 10 in VR.
rmorelan
I've heard that the VR jumped to 11 to decrease the proportion of out of SWOMEN applicants getting interviews, and thus leave more space for SWOMEN interviewees Any one else hear this or have any thoughts? well you are never going to get anyone to officially say why they did anything, but I guess the main counter to that is the drops they made in every single other admission cut off they had. Those must have countered the effect somewhat - there were a lot of happy people with the GPA, BS, PS and most importantly the WS drop. Generally I think the adcoms are forced to either set the cut offs ultra high (R is WS for Queens) or rotate them constantly in somewhat unusual ways to throw people of guard. Otherwise the cutoffs don't actually cut anyone off and are actually useless. That sort of cat and mouse gaming just adds to the stress but at this point (particularly with the chances to redo the mcat endlessly) it seems to be the way to go. That all being said I would have to say that I actually thing Queens BELIEVES in the writing sample as being important - based on their history, now onsite essays, and somethings their Dean mentioned during his presentation.
