cstark
I know that in order for your OOP application to be considered you need to be in the top 200 of OOP applicants using an algorithm that takes into account your gpa, and verbal and bio mcat scores and I am just wondering if anyone knows the equation they use. Also does anyone know what the cutoff was last year or the year before?
thatonekid
From page 6 of the application package: Non-Alberta ResidentsThe minimum GPA for consideration is 3.60/4.00 when the best two completed full-time years are averaged. Non-Albertans who meet the minimum GPA requirement are ranked using a formula. The GPA of the best two completed full-time years, along with the verbal reasoning and biological sciences scores on the MCAT are used for this ranking. Formula: 62.517 (GPA) + 12.122 (MCAT,VR) + 6.757(MCAT,BS) The top 200-250 non-Albertan applicants' files are then sent for complete review by the admissions committee. I've never applied to Calgary, but for what it's worth I've heard that having a score above 455 is likely to get you a full file review.
Secondary_Set
Yes its in that range or so I've heard. Actually, I've heard a bit lower--around 452 but mine's probably an older number. By my calculations, I have a score of 453. I am going to apply anyway, but could I just ask where you got those numbers from? Thanks!
sky_blue2000
Well I was basing my number of circumstantial evidence. But I'd apply if I were you. Take a look someone at the last post of this thread (made this year, talked about a cutoff around 452.http://premed101.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38940&highlight=oop+cutoff I calculated my score to be 426....do you guys think its worth applying anyway? bloh
The exact cutoff changes every year but it seems to hover around 240+ consistently.
AP_gooner
I calculated my score to be 426....do you guys think its worth applying anyway? It could be worth it. Mine is around 430 but I think I'm going to take a chance and skip the app... I'm lazy though. haha
metukah
should i bother applying with 403? just to make sure- the "GPA" portion is like your actualy GPA ie. 3.85 for 2 best years? thanks
ryacha
should i bother applying with 403? just to make sure- the "GPA" portion is like your actualy GPA ie. 3.85 for 3 best years? thanks From my understanding its the best 2 years, not 3? Also, does anyone know how the process goes from there? I should have 470 meaning a full file review is likely, but how are interview spots (and how many) are assigned for the OOP beyond that? Apixaban85
I'm assuming we'll have to use Calgary's GPA conversion table rather than our own univeristy's GPA?
medgirl08
Do they consider graduate courses in calculating GPA??

HBP
I would not apply with <445.
cryptic.living
So, just to be clear, the formula uses the GPA from two best years, one of which can be a completed grad school year ?
LupeFiasco
Yes for OOP applicants.
harryd
I'm from ontario, for my best two years I have a 3.99 and my algorithm score is 445. From what I've been seeing, that's below the cut off for OOP. Am I screwed?
gb35
I'm from ontario, for my best two years I have a 3.99 and my algorithm score is 445. From what I've been seeing, that's below the cut off for OOP. Am I screwed? I think I saw someone post here that they thought above 450 was safe. That being said, they review the top 200 OOP applicants I think. So say their magic number was 451 last year, it could well drop this year and be 440. It may not be likely, but it's at least possible. Long story short: if I were you, I'd apply...
blue2009
If I calculated correctly, I've got 449.865022 - do you think they round up? The GPA conversation always kills me.. oh well!
HBP
It's usually over 450 (451/452)... Obviously... apply anyway.
Blackkeys
argh. Applying with a 448. <fingers crossed>
TankMasterFlex
yeah I've got 444 right now and am waiting on results from my last MCAT. I think I'll apply anyway, who knows.
redpens
450.897? eek, hope I make it.
med1988
Is it true that even if the graduate degree has 0.5 credits, they will count that towards one year? (i.e. the rest is pass/fail and research thesis based). Responses are appreciated in advance.
Organeer
Yes its in that range or so I've heard. Actually, I've heard a bit lower--around 452 but mine's probably an older number. Can someone tell me if these values have been published or where these numbers came from?
cryptic.living
The VR thing is killing me. I have 445 now But to THINK, I could have 457 if I just had ONE more point in VR
LostLamb
Think about it this way...what if this is a year of many OOPs with low VR? Maybe the cut off score will go down this cycle? If you're close, it might be worth the effort. Time is ticking though...less than a week to get refs in and write impact statements...
