jdr44
Hi Everyone. I think if my calculations are correct according to OSMAS my gpa is 3.30. I have pretty decent extra curriculars and I am from a rural town in Ontario. What are your thoughts on me applying this year? Is it worth it? Cheers
Wayward son
Hi Everyone. I think if my calculations are correct according to OSMAS my gpa is 3.30. I have pretty decent extra curriculars and I am from a rural town in Ontario. What are your thoughts on me applying this year? Is it worth it? Cheers Whether it is worth it or not depends on several factors. If it is the choice between not applying to any medical school and applying to one then in almost all cases I would say go for it. If it is a situation where someone has a decent chance at a specific (or a couple) medical school(s), but a really poor chance at other medical schools then I think that it is to their advantage to only apply to the medical school where their chances are best and directing all of their attention towards that school(s). This would be especially a case for a school like NOSM where they have a unique mandate and therefore have a slightly different admissions focus. As for NOSM specifically, having pretty decent extracurriculars will help, but remember extracurriculars directed towards or accomplished in the north will help more. And anything in your history which indicates a desire towards northern, remote, and/or aboriginal medicine would be a bonus. Hundreds of applicants will have what it takes to become a medical doctor so that allows NOSM to look for those candidates who are most likely to make a difference and practice in northern and remote areas. Saying that you are from a rural town in ontario is not sufficient information. Is the town in northern ontario? If not, how far is that town from a major center? And how many years did you live in that rural town? Your whole life (outside university)? Or a couple years? None of that is meant to be discouraging, just realistic. Still applying to one medical school is better than applying to none (you can't win if you don't play). NOSM's requirement of a minimum of a 3.0 (with no MCAT etc) leaves the door open for candidates with a less than stellar GPA to get an interview if you can impress them. Think about what can you write about yourself that will make the admissions committee agree that you deserve an interview?
sirop
Frankly, I think you should apply anyways. The experience is worth it.
DrMom
Definitely apply! I also had a lower GPA, with excellent EC's, many years working in research/health care. I got an interview last year which I didn't expect. I was not accepted but was on the wait list.
