Chicago Love
I am a B.C. resident currently studying in the United States. What fulfills the biochemistry requirement? Our school only offers two quarters (2/3 of a year) of traditional biochemistry curriculum. What else is considered as "biochemistry"?
AndreaM
I think you'd have to ask UBC's med office directly about this one. Here is UBC's list of Canadain Biochem equivalents (http://www.med.ubc.ca/__shared/assets/Acceptable_Biochemistry_Courses_-_Canadian_Universities16588.pdf) that you could look at for comparison purposes, and you could always take it as a distance course from Athabasca if you have to. A really interesting alternative for you might be to do it at UBC in the summer. It's an intensive 6-week course. You could hang out in BC for 6weeks and fulfill the requirement easily. Just a suggestion!
dan0105
That 6 week classes sucks. Its biochem for like 3.5 hours everyday, which at first doesn't seem like the end of the world, but keep in mind that you need to memorize all that crap too because it all works off of previous days material... The biochem prereq is satisfied usually if you can basically cover the following over a years worth of courses (that would go 3 times a week for an hour each): - proteins and protein structure - enzymes and enzyme reaction rates - sugars, carbohydrates, etc - DNA, transcription, translation - metabolic pathways: Kreb, glycolysis, Urea, glucose and fat breakdown, energy storage pathways, etc. - cell signalling pathways, hormone regulated pathways, etc

dmleo
I recently called the UBC med to inquire about this as well, and the answer was "the biochemistry requirement is fulfilled if the course content in your school matches 75% or more with the content covered in biochem courses at UBC" so this means the course must deal with proteins, nucleic acids, metabolism and must have a lab component according to the person I spoke with. kylamonkey
The BIOC 300 at UBC does not have a lab component, unless they've changed it in th last 3 yrs...

kylamonkey
If you are a current applicant, I would suggest emailing them. Then you have a record of exactly what was said. Weird about the lab thing.
