Hamilton

Hello!

I'm considering attending McMaster for my undergraduate degree.

What's it like to live in Hamilton? How is it as a city? Obviously not as cosmopolitan as Toronto, but how'd you all find it?

I'm a city boy who grew up in Toronto and went to school in Forest Hill. I had m doubts going to Hamilton which has a Canada-wide reputation for being a crap hole. While they is partially true (there is a great deal of poverty), I found the experience to be enriching and rewarding. There was an abudance of ways to get involved in the community and serve the needy. I took advantage of that and gained a lot from it.

The school is amazing for health sciences (not just the hsci program) - a great launching point to get into medicine. Cost of living is relatively low compared to queens and western, or toronto. Materialism isn't as in-your-face as in Toronto.

Mac is a very multiculturally diverse school, as is the city. Lots of great ethnic food to be explored and tried.

I did my 4 year undergrad here and loved the city and school -- I could have gone almost anywhere for med school but I chose to return to Mac because I love the school and the city.

I totally agree.

First off, the area of Hamilton in which Mac is situated (Westdale) is very nice; there are coffee shops, some cute boutiques, great dining.

Student housing is for the most part pretty great, definitely better than the ghetto at Queen's and far cheaper.

And if you're into bars/going out, Hamilton is pretty amazing for that too. There's Hess village with a bar for any mood you might be in, plus a few more quiet pub type places closer to campus.
