Canadian Citizen studying in Australia ?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have a question regarding this. I understand that if get my M.D in the states, it is going to be very difficult for me to come back and do residency in Canada and find employment because I have to go through all kinds of tough examinations & Licensing procedures ...(correct me if I am mistaken).

Is it the same issue in Australia? What disadvantages do I get if I go to Australia for Med school?

Thanks

If you go to Australia for med school, you'll have even MORE disadvantages than a US MD school. Because now, you'll be an IMG, and matching hack into Canada/US will be a whole lot harder as an IMG. Out of the 2 options, a US MD is much "easier".

It depends on what you like. Canadian med schools and American ones are different, with much more clinical exposure and making students 'play the part' from the begining in Canadian schools. In Australia and Ireland you will get a very similar experience to one in Canada but it will be a little harder to come back. US MD is a good route but you have to like traditional 9-5 class of lectures/labs. Some Canadian students are like this but most are half day class, then small group and case based/pbl work.
