CDN_premed_
Hi, Im just starting my NAQ for UBC application (I know I'm slightly late) and I have a few questions! 1) Where does research experience fall under? I received NSERC, Ontario work studies, and worked for free a semester. Should this go under work or under non-academic section? If so which one? 2) Also, for the high performance section, can you include activities from high school? I've been playing cello since 9 and have played in the community orchestra in high school and also played in a musical in high school. I play it as a hobby and play around 1hr per week. 3) similar to #2, I played basketball since grade school. what should be my starting date? I've played intramurals throughout high school and university. I also play it as a hobby and I have been coaching basketball for 2 years. Can I include this ? 4) Do admissions committee actually check verifiers for # hours? I'm just curious Thanks everyone for your help!!
guest44
ya a couple of my verifiers last yr told me that they (cant remember if it was ubc) asked to confirm whether the description, timeline, and hours were accurate

I'm just curious Thanks everyone for your help!! 1) If you were paid for your work, then you have to put it under the Employment History section. If you weren't paid, then it can go under the Non-Academic activities section. I'm putting my volunteer research work under diversity of experience. 2) From what I hear, most people don't even get points in this section unless they were an Olympic athlete or something along the same lines as that. Did you win any major awards or go to international competitions or anything like that? I think that's what they're looking for in the High Performance section. 3) Yeah, I would include it. If you played on your high school team, then your starting date would be when you first started on the team. I think it might be harder if you played informally, but as long as you have a verifier then it should be ok. 4) I'm sure they can't check everyone's verifiers to confirm the hours, but they may check randomly. I think it would be in your best interests to make sure that your verifier knows how many hours you put down so there are no mix-ups.

I'm just curious Thanks everyone for your help!! 1/ I emailed them about the NSERC, and they said to put it under NA. I was thiking it should have gone in academic awards? Oh well. 2/ I don't think that count as high performance. I have a few things in that section, but I don't think many applicants do. In mine, for example, I'm putting that I did the Ironman triathlon. 3/You can put high school as a starting date. They do say in the help section that you can include high school to show long-term involvement. I've been out of high school for more than 10 yrs so I'm not including anything from high school, even the running I did in high school (and there was a lot). 4/ They might. I just email all my verifiers before I submit to tell them exactly what I am putting in that section.
medgirl08
Re: Area of high performance: My previous work at a research facility translated to an actual cure for a deadly disease and even made news headlines. Do you guys think I should include that??
ozzie89
I put my NSERC in Academic Awards, considering it was awarded to me based solely on GPA...and I have already submitted my application. Do you think this would be a problem? I am now wishing I had just double checked on that one before submitting!

tennisgirl
yeah i put mine under awards as well. i doubt this is a big deal unless your NSERC is taking the spot of another "more academic" award.
kylamonkey
Hmm, I e-mailed them regarding NSERC as well and they told me to put it under awards.. Grr. That was my first instinct as well. I have pretty much exactly 5 awards worth putting in the awards section. Maybe I will double check before submitting.
