enmeds
Quick question, for NOSM we all know they prefer rural applicants. If I have lived in an urban center for most of my life but spent the last year-year and a half living in a rural center, would that matter to the adcom? future_doc
I would say it helps and obviously, you will incorporate this in your answer and use it to advantage, building upon it. Better late than never.
headshok2002
For proof of rural experience, NOSM asks 2 things.... 1. Population of where you lived when you were an adolescent. 2. Postal code when you were in Secondary school. So your past year in a rural setting will have to be covered in your other answers somehow. When I applied they asked for the postal codes of all places I had ever lived and dates to accompany them. I remember this because I was able to state that I was born in Elliot Lake and lived there until I was 9. Perhaps they have stopped doing this? Hoote
Does anyone really have a good understanding of how they determine what is rural/remote? For the last 3 years I have lived in a town/military base of 1500but I am 25 min from a city of 40,000 and 2 hours from Winnipeg (500,000?). Would I be considered rural? I also grew up and did high school in that same town of 40,000. Post graduation I lived in Edmonton for about a decade. Does that water down my current rural (if it is rural) status? Any ideas? The link I posted above shows what they do...its just your RI score based on your postal code. I believe, they also rank the city you grew up in based on the following criteria less than 10,000 10,000-20,000 above 20,000 They take into account where you went to highschool, where you have lived and where you live now. Hope that clears things up.

The RI score is quite low for Sudbury, for example, but the stats reveal that only 39% of this year's entering class are from rural and remote areas (including in Northern Ontario). That means that 61% are from cities. I'm guessing that Sudbury, North Bay and Thunder Bay are the most popular cities.
Cnussey
Proximity to a city is considered.
