Dr. Seuss
Did anyone else receive this? I'm new to UOttawa this year so I'm not entirely sure how the university works. I'm going to be starting medicine next year. _________________________________________________ Reminder checklist * I have registered for my fall and winter courses through InfoWeb via uoZone. * I have registered for my faculty’s mandatory orientation session (Note: Students from all faculties sign up on the u101 website except for students of the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Education, who will be receiving separate instructions from their Faculty). * I check uoZone and my uOttawa email account regularly to get the latest news. * I know that many of the services I need before the start of the school year will be grouped together starting August 23 in Tabaret Hall, Room 112 (550 Cumberland St.). To find out more, I can visit My Prep Week 2010. * I know that, in order to get my student identity card, I must present valid identification (a list of acceptable ID can be found on the student card procedures website). * I regularly check My Financial Portfolio in InfoWeb via uoZone to see if my student loan has arrived. * I know that, in order to get my loan or bursary during My Prep Week 2010, I must be registered and present my social insurance card and one other government-issued photo identity card (examples: passport, driver’s licence, citizenship card, provincial health card). * I checked the u101 Newsletter and picked the activities I want to do. * I know that I can come and buy my meal plan now in order to avoid line-ups. * I am aware that full-time students can pick up their U-Pass starting August 23. * I am aware that the deadline to pay student fees is September 3, 2010. I can avoid waiting in line by paying online through my financial institution (credit card payments are not accepted). University of Ottawa staff members wish you much success in the 2010-2011 academic year. _________________________________________________ What's this thing about registration that the Law and Education faculty are exempt from but Meds aren't? Should I have access to my UOttawa e-mail by now? What services are offered in Tabaret Hall? I get to pick activities? I'm guessing that's reserved for undergrads. If they have something cool like whitewater rafting around Ottawa I'd like to sign up, haha. What's the U-Pass? If anyone went to Ottawa during undergrad and can help me out I'd really appreciate it
supafield
I am pretty sure this doesn't apply to us either... It the last e-mail we got, our o-week activities are outlined... and it specify that we must be there Wednesday between 12 and 2 to register. andyng85
What services are offered in Tabaret Hall? What's the U-Pass? If anyone went to Ottawa during undergrad and can help me out I'd really appreciate it Hi, my understanding is that most services from the week of Aug 23 will be held at Tabaret Hall (ie: financial aids, student ID pickup) The U-Pass is a new bus pass for university students that is meant to reduce the cost of bus pass for students. Whereas previous students would pay in excess of $400 for a pass for two semester, the U-pass is included in the tuition (~$150/term) for all full time students, thus providing significant savings to students. Hope this helps

Mainly providing savings to those who usually wanted the bus pass. For people who live within walking distance of school, or for the 4th year med students who will be all over the country doing electives for the majority of the school year, it's providing a significant expense (300$ when we would otherwise have spent about 30$ in tickets through the year...). But that's besides the point of the question and the answer you provided to it... I guess I just had to get it off my chest It's really too bad they didn't provide an opt-out option, because for now many save 100$/year, but we loose almost 300$/year. Oh well, hopefully it'll have positive consequences for the environment...
kbox
Should I have access to my UOttawa e-mail by now? I believe you should have access to your uOttawa email by now... I seem to remember receiving an email about setting it up a few months ago (mine is up and running)

Here's the conditions for opting out: Is it possible to opt-out of the U-Pass program (from the SFUO website)? A student registered with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind; A student that holds a valid U-Pass issued by another post-secondary educational institution located within the City of Ottawa. A student studying outside Canada for more than 60 days during the semester for which the U-Pass is valid; A student that is attending the University of Ottawa at a campus located outside the City of Ottawa (i.e Pembroke campus), or; A student who lives within the STO's (Société de transport de l'Outaouais) area of service. Technically, you're still a student of UOttawa but you're not in the City of Ottawa campus, so you could try and opt out. I know a lot of grad students in different cities doing work have done it. Sorry for the random thread hijack I've just been hearing all about the UPass and thought I'd pass the info along!
