Kathryn
I had to knock my courseload back a bit this semester since I'm paying tuition in cash, but I still need to take one more half course to be considered a full time student. My primary intent right now is to take the prerequisites to qualify for a college lab technologist program, but there aren't any more of those available for this term. I thought I'd fill the gap by starting on my UManitoba social studies/humanities requirements, but NOTHING looks interesting. Suggestions are welcome at this point. I'd hate to waste money and time on a course that I'm not getting anything out of, know what I mean? Everyone feel free to tell anecdotes about courses you thought would suck, but didn't. I like art, drama, dance, etc but none of those courses qualify and I'm not a huge history buff.
astrogirl
I took an archeology class about human pre-history once, and it was pretty good. It was basically about the anthropological side of human evolution - all about the different hominid species and when they lived, what tools they used, the history of food domestication, etc, and how we know all of this. Kathryn
I'm not sure I'm wanting something with tons of extra reading involved. Don't get me wrong, I love to read, but I work full time as well so I just don't have the hours to spend. I wish I could take a course like Math in Art, but I don't think it qualifies as a social science or a humanity.
astrogirl
Hmmm, yeah, there was a lot of reading in that class. Do they have an philosophy of science classes where you are? I did one of those once and it was fun and not too much work. Or do you like writing? I took creative writing once and it was easy and constantly interesting because all we did was write and then come to class (it was a 3 hour night class) and get in small groups and read what our group members had written an discuss it. Even if you don't like writing in general, you might like that kind of writing because there's no research involved, you don't follow all kinds of picky rules, and you pretty much do what you want. It's a lot like an art class in some ways. Or maybe a language class, if that counts? I took a lot of random classes in my undergrad, so I'm just a fountain of ideas over here. Kathryn
I just looked at the list of every single available distance course for this term and found an abnormal psych one that looks okay, although psych has always boned me before....masquerading as interesting in the catalog but not actually being interesting. I'm going to check out all the night classes too right away. Creative writing does actually sound like fun.
nosuperman
Wait so you're going for the Lab-Tech or the University program? If you plan on attending University then why not wait until you're there as you'll have to take full semesters anyhow?
Kathryn
Lab Technologist is my first priority, but I need to pick up some of the university prereqs first. I'm getting a couple of them this coming year and finishing them over the summer. There's a two year waiting list for the program anyway, so instead of sitting on my butt and waiting for a seat, I'm trying to make a good dent in my degree (or even finish it if I keep going throughout the summers). I got a crap registration time this year and there were a few prereqs I couldn't get, so I'm filling in the spaces with other stuff. UManitoba wants so many hours of social science/humanities, so that's what I'm trying to fill in with. I know I should save them for later on when the sciencey stuff gets tougher, but this is a nasty transition year for me as its my first working full time/doing school/being a single mom. I'm trying to ease into it. Anyways I ended up getting Abnormal Psychology, a psych research statistics class that sounds okay and I'm still hemming and hawing over treating myself to a micro course.
