Applying to Med and Dent simultaneously

Do medical/dental schools have any ways to find out that you applied to both schools simultaneously at the time of application?

For instance, I am interested in applying to U of Alberta medical school, but I am afraid that if I apply to U of Alberta dental school at the same time, the medical school admission committee may find out about it and penalize me in my med application.

No, they don't unless you tell them. They may ask you that question, but they can't verify it.

If they ask, just tell them that one of the two is your plan B and that nothing is certain in life, they will understand.

Absolutely - everybody needs a Plan B and it is the most normal thing in the world to apply to professional schools in different discipline. If anything, it is a plus and this shows you have actively considered alternatives. I would be open about my applications, there is nothing to hide or use against you. I would be entirely comfortable in discussing what I did and why, that my Plan B is the other school!
