It sounds like an electronic version of last year's paper letter. Glad they've made the transition to electronic! Makes life much easier!

Is this bad in any way?

 

One is from the academic, research side, and the other knows me from a volunteer position.

 

 

 

On an unrelated note: Is the UAlberta reference form just a space to type a "letter", or does it ask several questions with space to answer them?

 

I don't think so. It is more important what they say, not who they are. You are covering both bases (volunteer/extracurricular and academics) so you should be good to go. Good luck!
