Confusion about passing at UWO

Recommended Posts

Hey,

From my understanding to pass any course a cumulative mark of 60% is needed (i.e. on Heart and Circulation if you get 0% on the midterm which is worth 30%, if you get 100 on the rest of the course material you would get a passing grade of 70%).

However, someone recently sent me this line from the Schulich Medicine site

"For Year 1, students must pass all course work, assignments, examinations of each course in the year, as defined by the Course Chair(s)."

Does this mean we are required to pass every component of each course? Or was my original way of thinking correct.

Thanks :)

Historically it's been a final cumulative mark of 60. Things do change though, as community health has shown us.

This is from the syllabus:

In order to pass Community Health Year 1 you must:

1. Pass the Epidemiology component of the course AND

2. Pass the Population Health component of the course, AND

3. Complete the Tricouncil Policy Statement Tutorial.

In the past, could you have passed the Epi portion, and failed the Population Health part, and could still pass the course?

Yes - the problem was since most people do quite well on the early parts of the course they basically would have passed the course by the time the latter sections are tested - 60% is not hard to get. Confronted with exams in cardio, respiration etc, which are harder core courses, people completely ignored the rest of community health in dramatic ways. The admins thought that was not a good idea so a new policy was made :)

similar changes are being considered in other things, but it is all logical and fair i think

That's my understanding, yes.

Yeah absolutely!

There were potential rule changes this year for the 2014s but they were dodged until next year it seems. So for now it is straight 60% to pass a block - of course, at risk of being repetitive, people generally do much better than simply hitting the pass level :)

Thanks maodiddymao and rmorelan . . Yeah, the averages in every course so far have been fairly high, but it is reassuring to hear that if you fail a test, you can make it up on the final :)

Sure :) Now in the future that may not be quite the same - Western like a lot of schools are trying to balance the freedom and comfort provided with the 60% pass fail system, with some measure of insurance that standards are maintained high. There is a chance that you would have to pass the test portion (which is 70% usually of any block) on its own. Considering just how much that portion is anyway though that really isn't a big deal.

That sounds like a good idea, as PCCIA / the assignment are usually easy marks :) . . Any idea of when this might be implemented? Or is it still in the planning stages?

Thanks!

Nothing settled yet so we will see! It potentially was going to be activated for your class but due to the short notice and some issues we brought up it was not.

Just one of the many things we are working on trying to improve the already awesome program :)
