**** this wait!

Recommended Posts

50 days left for western schools, 42 days left for eastern!!

Considering finals are coming up soon, I think time is going to start going by fairly quickly. It is definitely dragging by pretty slowly right now though, probably because everything is now completely out of our control. Probably the worst part of this wait is knowing that U of A probably knows already who is accepted/rejected/waitlisted, as they have no essays to mark and the mmi scores could be compiled in a fairly insignificant amount of time. They are in an agreement with the other western schools, apparently, that they will release results on the same day (may 13th). uhg!

All the best to my fellow members of medical school purgatory!

I can't seem to make up my mind between: "yeah baby I rocked the interview now I'm totally going to get in" and "holy **** I'm so screwed what if I don't get in"

If I recall correctly, I must have changed my mind about the outcomes of my interviews for at least 10 times just today and started speculating how much I would have scored on the GPA section/interview/extracurriculars etc.... based on premed101 thread.

At the end of each MMI stations, when they ask you "do you have anything to add", I always wanted to ask my interviewers what scores they are going to give me. :)

Seems my brain is doing the same thing as yours.

Also, good thing you didn't, because that would be insta red flags.

diddos!!!!!!!

I wish I could call up the U of A people and ask them if I got in/not asap.

I was planning on going on a trip to Europe after April, but now I'm debating. If I get in on May 13th, it'll be a happy trip for me, but if I don't (god please noooooo!!!!!!!!)and I open up my email on the 13th, then it'll totally RUIN my trip!

:(

Go on the trip anyways! I went on a trip shortly after my rejection from UBC last year, and it was a great escape. I was able to enjoy the trip completely. Besides, who wants to go back to work/school/whatever for months and months right after a medical school rejection?

Lol hopefully that never happens. Or even if it does happen, I hope that I can eventually get taken off from the waitlist!!

Speaking of which, do we know how many people get off from U of A's waitlist each year?

According to U Calgary students at the interview, approximately 80~100 people got off from their waitlist in 2009/2010 cycle. Not sure if this is true, but if it is indeed true, that's a lot!

Calgary's actually moved 121 last cycle haha...

UofA's moved by 65 spots (Page 43 of the same report)

^ Many schools "over-accept" with initial offers (in anticipation of being turned down). So that document isn't always an accurate source of waitlist movement (at least for Ontario schools).

That seems like a risky move. What if more people accepted than they were expecting?

By the way, just though I update you guys on the release date countdown: 46 days until may 13th!!!

Yea I agree, overaccepting sounds like risky business but I’m sure it’s not a lot to cause the schools problems (maybe 10-20 students over the quota?)

But the numbers from the AFMC report still look good for the interviewees.

U of A interviewed 480 people for 167 spots this year. If we take last year’s numbers as an example, 232 people received an offer at some point (almost 50% acceptance rate after the interview). And that’s not including the people who removed themselves from the waitlist before an offer could have been made to them had they stayed on it.

On a different note, looks like U of A is the more popular school in Alberta based on the number of offers declined. But I could be totally wrong considering that U of C interviews many more OOP students… which could mean they went deeper into the OOP waitlist to fill their quota. This wouldn’t be possible at U of A since they interview almost half the number of OOP students (approx. 70 vs 125).

omg..... such a long wait.... AND THE LONGER THE WAIT THE MORE I GO BACK AND FOURTH ABOUT MY INTERVIEW ANSWERS....

Suziep100, I got rejected post-interview last year and went to europe (I'm from there tho), and it was a great decision. Helps give you something to look forward to whether or not you get in. And a year off isn't so bad, It helped me realize truly why i want to be a physician!

i had some interviewers that gave me really positive feedback, BUT ONE GUY, he was older and i'm pretty sure was a physician, the buzzer went off for the "1 minute left" right after i asked for a prompt, then he says "do you really think you want a prompt right now" so i said "well... i guess i may not have time, I could quickly reiterate my response" then he said " no you already did that" .... so i was just left being like wtf lol....

Ask LostLamb, it seems like she's been on the wait list at both for the last 3 years. U of A has a much shorter waitlist than Calg since a lot of OOP reject Calg and U of A doesn't get as many OOP applicants. If you get interviews to both IP there's probably a 50-60 percent chance you'll get into one of two, I remember doing the math a whiles back. When I got off calg's waitlist it was like the last spot (my score was like 0.01 above the last accepted person) so they only gave me 24 hours to respond, if you don't check your e-mail that could screw you over a bit.
