What do schools think about Course-based Masters?

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking about doing a 1 year course based masters. The primary schools I'm interested in are UBC, and the University of Toronto, (maybe Queens as well).

Does anyone know how course based masters are looked upon at these two universities? Especially in relation to research masters.

I know UofT has a separate review process for Graduate students. But, they do differentiate between course and research masters.

UBC says they show no preference to Graduate students on their website, however their offers are provisional on completing your masters, so that almost sounds like a potential disadvantage to doing a masters with no benefits.

My GPA is fine, so it's not like I need to take the masters to boost my grades. In fact, if anything I'd be risking my grades by doing my masters. Any thoughts?
