Hagemenfactor
Hey folks I'm just curious if anybody can make an educated guess on whether UofA takes the difficulty of your program (or courses) into account or as long as you can get your degree in time by taking appropriate courses, we are laughing? Thanks boys and girls!
MD2019_A
i dont think they do. pretty sure no med school in canada does. correct me if im wrong
Hagemenfactor
I think UofC looks at what courses you took and what level of those courses are for the subjective component of assessing your academic score. My friend and I who both got cold rejected by uofc last year, had exact same academic score although our GPA are different by ~0.
ellorie
i dont think they do. pretty sure no med school in canada does. correct me if im wrong U of T does, and so does Calgary. Others may - not every school is forthcoming about their process.

Mithril
UBC says they look at trends in grades from year to year and whether you can undertake the rigour of med school. I think a lot of schools have some subjective scoring to see whether you have some fluff program or not without explicitly saying it.
Hagemenfactor
As far as I can tell from my own research and talking to other people who got in U of A doesn't care about anything but having the pre-reqs done and your cGPA minus 1. GL Hi Para D! Thanks for the input, but what is cGPA-1 deal? Sorry, I'm just a newbie
medguy5367
I have had the opportunity to informally talk to 2 people on U of A adcom. They do keep your major in mind. Engineering students in particular are looked at in a very different light, and you can basically add ~0.3 points to your GPA if you are so inclined. They are up to their neck in 4.0 GPA science students, and so you generally need SOMETHING to set you apart if you are a science student. You didn't hear it from me

You didn't hear it from me "Officially", if you go by what they put on their website, U of A does not care about the difficulty of your courses or the major you took. Upon submitting your transcript, a cGPA is calculated and that value is worth 30% I believe. All that matters is the number as far as undergrad academics is concerned. BUT as medguy5367 pointed out, we don't always know what goes on behind closed doors. Maybe there is an "unofficial" consideration? If there is, they don't openly tell us about it. Good Luck!
