Mcgill Dent Stats chance

Recommended Posts

OP,

You need to let people know a little more about yourself to try and asses what your chances are (what have you been up to in addition to trying to get decent marks). I can tell you this though, the GPA averages for the past few years would suggest that you have a good shot at an interview. Accepted students have an average of about 3.8 (all grades over their UG degree) and I imagine the grade distribution is normal but I don't know the width (I think that one can assume that there are several 4.0's every year though) if this is the case then there are also several 3.7's. Anyway, if you have been very active it will be to your benefit (and it is not too late to do something special) read this http://www.mcgill.ca/dentistry/dean/mission and note that McGill feels that it is very important to focus on helping the under-served, IMO that is the place to start doing something special that will impress the interview committee (They are also very research oriented). If you want to know more about the interview process at McGill let me know, it is surprisingly fun (although like all interview processes it has its flaws)...

It's definitely not all about grades at McGill dent. In fact I believe that after you are granted the interview all your credentials get wiped off the table and it all comes down to your interview ranking. All you need is a 3.5 to make it passed the first hurdle. I even know of a few ppl who didn't have a 3.5 but still made it in..altho 'politics' may have played a role there :)

After that your fate is determined by how they judge your desire to be a dentist as well as your extracurriculars/research/lors and overall interview skills. Let them know this is what you want and prepare to be very outgoing and have a good answer ready for 'why dentistry and why mcgill'?

They are looking for mature, well rounded applicants who have shadowing, volunteer and research experience. An MSc does help (unlike med) but applying to both medicine and dent is a big no no. Good luck!

+1

I think they take >10 IP ppl in the regular pool, so a 3.7 is competitive. They need good letters of recommendation and an autobiographical sketch. Most importantly of course, is that you need to ace the interview. They've been using a traditional interview style so be prepared to talk about almost anything about yourself and what you said in your sketch.

Was there anyone invited this year with a 3.5 (last year the lowest GPA interviewed was 3.59)? Also, although reality might be different they are supposed to take your grades/EC's/refs/letter into account even after the interview ranking:

"Once the interviews have been completed all the components of the application process – GPA’s for applicants to the D.M.D. program, Cote-R for applicants to the Dent-P program, scores assigned to the autobiographical letter and interview performance – are aggregated. Places in the entering class are offered to those whose assembled scores are the most competitive."

I had a 3.57 and was interviewed. Although I also had an MSc degree in dental sciences from McGill and excellent letters of reference from professors within the faculty of dentistry.

This year it has changed somewhat. They do not add on 0.1 to the GPA anymore for candidates with a masters degree although they definitely take it under consideration and view it in a positive light.

Also I believe they do take more IP than OOP. That's just the way it seems to go. Very few IP people accepted decline while a few OOP students choose other schools so that probably affects the final composition of the class.

Every year is a bit different based on the applicant pool and other tweaks to the admissions process so nobody can ever be too sure.

* I forgot about the autobiographical letter. That is extremely important stuff so best make sure it's done properly.
