Math @ Mac

Recommended Posts

For anyone who is at Mac, please could you tell me about whether I should take the A stream or the L stream for Math:

Pros of MATH 1LS3 and 1LT3:

-Easier, almost a guaranteed 12

- Had a bad teacher in HS so I get to learn the material properly

- If I don't plan to take upper year math, this is sufficient knowledge for bio, chem, physics and the MCAT

- Even if I want to take upper year math, it is equivalent in terms of pre reqs to the A stream

Pros MATH 1A03 and 1AA3:

- I like math and am good at t so it'll provide a greater challenge

- Better preparation for upper year math

Please advise!:D

took 1a03 +1aa3 3 yrs ago (donno how much it's changed..took it with lovric and Klein) ...do enough practice from the text and u should be fine...math is one of those things that I found to be really similar to hs...as in...practice makes perfect and you can learn it from the textbook

You won't need any calculus knowledge for most (if not all) bio and chem courses. For physics, if you want to take 1B03/1BB3 then you probably need 1A03/1AA3, although I've heard of students who received a waiver from the department. If you've taken HS calculus, Math 1LS3 will be an easy 12 but you won't learn anything new and it may not be the best use of your tuition. Since you say you like math, I would recommend taking something more interesting and new (1A03) so that you actually put effort into the course and not slack off. It would suck to slack off in 1LS3 and then get a low mark. I took 1A03 in first year and thought it was challenging considering the only thing I did in HS calc was derivatives, while 1A03 goes well into integrals. I had to work hard to get a good mark and decided not to take 1AA3 because I realized it's not going to fulfill any of my prereqs. Take 1A03 if you plan on taking upper year math/physics, but if you just need a prereq in math then you can take the easy route.
