OOP Applicant! (GPA+Physics)

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I would like to apply to U of C. I know that they don't require physics courses but would it hurt me if I only had one physics class with no lab component?

Also, my GPA is around a 3.7-3.75 (calculated based on U of C guidelines)

I will be doing my MCAT in August.

Realistically, what are my chances of getting an interview/acceptance?

How could a physics course with no lab possibly hurt you when they don't require any physics in the first place?

Since they recently changed their admission standards, I doubt many people will be able to give you a reasonable estimation of where your chances are at.

In the past, UofA OOP GPA has been around 3.98ish. UofA drops your worst year. Their formula for OOP pre-interview is: 30 GPA + 20 MCAT + 20 Activities = 70.

UofC will be dropping the worst year. Their formula is 2 x GPA + VR. Its hard to determine how the VR will be converted (and I didn't read the standardization part). I speculate, given that they are dropping the worst year, and with no pre-requisite, they will have greater number of candidates than UofA (and this has been the case in the past). So the average GPA should be around atleast 3.8ish. Also since the GPA is more than VR, GPA will trump. An amazing VR can make up for a mediocare GPA, but very unlikely to make up for a weak GPA.

I would categorize your GPA as mediocre. If you get a 10 in VR definatley apply. With a 9, you have nothing to loose; with an 8, I would be banking on Divine Providence.

All of this is just to get to the file reviewing stage. After that, its less objective.

U of C doesn't have specific requirements but they have suggested a full year of physics with a lab component. I was asking if I don't have a full year of physics if it would hurt me because it would seem as if I'm not well rounded enough.

Hi,

Just wondering where you go the information about dropping the worst year from? I can't seem to find it on either the UofC or UofA website.

Thank you!
