Making UBC cut-0ff for a file review- help!

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Just wanted to get some advice or suggestions regarding my situation.

I'm applying this cycle to UBC and am finishing up a PhD this year. Unfortunately, my overall GPA is 74% (under the cut-off for a file review for IP). My adjusted GPA is higher. MCAT score is 31Q.

First- does anyone know if the adjusted GPA is used in assessing the cut-off for a file review (ie. is it used instead of the overall GPA)?

Second, I could take a few classes while I"m still registered as a PhD student to increase my GPA (I am also missing one pre-req) but the website does say people who do this are rarely offered admission. Does anyone know of people who have done this and gotten in? I'm fairly confident that my NAQ will make up for the low GPA, it's just a matter of getting over the cutoff for a file review.

Any advice would be great, thanks!!

I checked out the admissions website and in regards to your first point they say: "BC applicants with an overall academic average of less than 75% will not receive full file reviews and thus will not proceed further through the application process".

This probably means that you need to have 75% overall by the application deadline Aug 15th. So if the courses you take now can bump your average in about a months time, then that would be great.

If your overall average is below 74 but the adjusted average is above 75 I wonder if that would help at all?

Having said that, you would be in a position where your NAQ would probably have to be in the upper 20's based on the AQ formula that was thrown out for last years cycle.

So, I would clarify the adjusted gpa issue with Ubc medicine. Apply anyways to see where you are at and go from there.

This is one of those things that I was talking about when I responded to robin hoods post about gpa.

You are finishing off a phd and because of the competitiveness of Ubc medical school you might have a hard time getting an interview.

Anyways, good luck.

FYI - I had a B+ average overall (last 60 = 80%), got 23/25 on the NAQ, got an interview and then didn't get in. I had an MCAT VR issue which you don't seem to have (?) as well as a couple of stations not going well in the MMI. They are STRINGENT so with your GPA, brace yourself for a few bumps in trying to get into UBC. I think times are extremely tough these days for IP applicants with lower than about 83-85% oGPA's. But best of luck!
