Second year BMSC advice

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, I'm going into my second year for bmsc and currently in medsci but I want to switch to phys/pharm. I have 2 credits for electives and am having trouble deciding which courses I should take.

I've heard good things of both phys and pharm being not too difficult. I would also like to see if I'm truly interested in those subjects to continue with them in third year. I'm not sure whether to take both or just one of them or just take other courses. Some courses I consider would be psych 1000 which I never took but seems interesting and would help with my breadth requirement or other category A bird courses.

Any input and advice is appreciated.

Psych 1000 is fairly straightforward but I'm not sure you'll be wanting to deal with the ridiculous amount of reading required for each of the 4 exams (each exam has roughly 200 pages of testable material + in class material) in your second year, especially when you'll be taking Orgo I and II, biochem, cell bio, genetics, 2290, biostats, etc.

I'd suggest taking physiology 2130 if you're looking for exposure to physiology before third year. It's fairly simple and straightforward.

I don't know much else about category A courses, but I've heard that classics 2200 and classics 2300 are both good courses to fulfill the category B breadth requirement (if you're still looking to fulfill it).

physio 2130 (2nd year physiology) not psychology. pretty simple course and the profs want you to get 80+.

psych 1000 isn't bad at all. the reading is easy but you really need to plan your time wisely so you don't have 4 chapters to read right before the exam.

Oh, sorry reading fail.

I guess I could do physio and psych 1000 as my electives but I'd rather have something less heavy on reading.

Any info on pharm 2060? Is it worth taking at all?

Also I still need some options for an easy category a course, full or half depending on if I do physio, pharm or both.

I've heard good things about pharm 2060B, although I have never taken it. Apparently it's the same course the nursing students take, except they have their own section. Science/med sci students don't seem to have much trouble with the course but I've read somewhere on these forums that nursing students seem to struggle with it. It's supposed to be fairly heavy on memorization, but besides that, it's an easy online course and I'm probably taking it next year because I can't fit it into my schedule this year.

But yeah, the general consensus about pharm 2060B seems to be that it is a bird course.

EDIT: For category A, perhaps you should look into first year sociology? One of my friends took it and said it was pretty easy, although I can't remember their professor.

I've heard Writing 2101 F/G is pretty easy...my friend said she took it 2 years ago or so and there were four essays, no midterm or final and she scored decently. It IS an essay course though, so be prepared for that if you decide to take it, here's the course outline if you're interested:

PS make sure it's a category A course, as I think it is, but you should probably make sure as that's what you're looking for haha.

This is assuming I'm doing 3.0 credits of year 2 biomed, however Schulich seems to really push taking all 3.5 courses in which case I wouldn't have the 0.5 left over for anything.

I was thinking about not taking genetics 2581 second year and instead doing it in third year as it is only required second year for 2 modules, Biochemistry of Infection and Immunity, and Microbiology and Immunology.

I think the reason for them pushing the 3.5 course option is so that if you mess up in one of the half courses, you still have a good shot at getting into whatever medical science/BMSc module you want because they only take your top 3.0. The second year courses (I thought at least!) were a fair bit harder than first year, so I went for all 3.5 to give myself some leeway. Then again, I'm in MicroImm, so I didn't really have a choice...

Unfortunately they only offer pharm 2060b which won't fit in my schedule so now I'm stuck looking for an interesting but easy 0.5a course. Or I might just go with my original plan of only going 3.0 of the 3.5 recommended courses and do one of the year 2 b courses in year 3, in which case I would have room for my electives but also need an easy 0.5a course as well.

I want to go with dropping genetics and taking pharm instead but I'm getting Error: You are unable to enroll in this class at this time. Available seats are reserved and you do not meet the reserve capacity requirements.

I think nursing students are given priority, is there any specific date where these reserved courses open up to other students?

I believe there are two sections of the course. One reserved for nursing students, and the other reserved for science students. Make sure you're attempting to enroll yourself in the correct section.

Good call on dropping genetics by the way. The back to back cell bio/genetics midterms can get pretty brutal if you let yourself slip and fall behind.
