Volunteering at a hospital

Recommended Posts

Am I the only one that finds it completely unrewarding?

The staff there are INCREDIBLY insulting, hurtful and disrespectful and yet I still bite back and do everything they ask and give it my all. Today was just the worst day of them all and I almost quit on the spot.

They honest to god treat me like I owe them a favour which I no way in hell do. I'm wondering if I should speak to volunteer resources but I don't want to seem like some high school kid starting drama with the staff or spoiled/bratty, etc. Plus it's only for a short amount of time.

however it's gotten so bad that I don't even want to show up anymore because it's just embarrassing and insulting for me there.

Which hospital is this? If they are harassing you then talk to the student adviser.

I volunteer at my local hospital and i've never once had anything like this happen to me. Usually the staff leave you alone or are kind enough to help you out.

I don't think it's wise to say right now haha.

The department I work in is full of young nurses/doctors and they'll full out INFRONT of me be like "volunteers are useless here, you have to do things yourself"

when I'm constantly going around, asking people if they're okay, etc, at anyones disposal. It's super rude. that's just a regular day, today I got legitimately lectured because someone thought I wasn't doing my job. Super frustrating that they think they are gods gift to the world. I am sad that some of my peers will grow up to be the next them.

Are you sure its not you? Which hospital/department this is since I've volunteered at a few and never had this happen to me. Volunteer positions are usually very chill and don't require alot of work.

No I'm pretty sure it's not me, I don't even take breaks to sit down.. I'm constantly on my feet, talking to patients, etc. And if patients have all been dealt with then I walk around and make myself available to nurses/doctors if they ever need help. Which is completely rare anyway. It's ridiculous, I'm not lazy or anything.

I'm sorry to hear that, I volunteer at a hospital too but the staff are very welcoming and appreciative. From what you're saying they're not acknowledging the fact that you're giving up free time that you could be spending doing something else, possibly NOT for free...maybe seek a transfer to another department that isn't like this? Are there other volunteers, and do they receive similar treatment?

The other volunteers are old and have been there for a long time, they give me the hardest time. Theres another volunteer that works with me and I try to follow them alot to maybe see if I AM the problem but nope.. I just don't understand. And that volunteer isn't there as often as I am so I get all the heat.

I strongly recommend talking to your adviser. If they continue to harass you they can get in alot of trouble. To be honest, I would look for another department to volunteer for, it's probably just the people in that department. It's sad that people like them exist, I strongly encourage you to switch and leave them, hopefully they'll understand how important a volunteer is.

This should not be happening. I suggest either transferring to another department, or quitting altogether. And maybe email the volunteer coordinator so they know what has been going on.

There's a ton of hospitals in the GTA. You do not need (and should not) to deal with such nonsense. Also, aren't you at 2 or 3 hospitals right now? Are the other positions better?

I start at a new hospital in august. I'm going to talk to volunteer services asap, you have all helped me make up my mind lol, thanks everyone.
