LiM students

Recommended Posts

haha, you do if you really believe it, and you want to donate it to us.:D

If you are a LiM student, you basically defer you MD education and that spot will be available for waitlister. That is, you are a graduate student and when you're done, you go back to UME to finish your 3 year program.

Do any LiM students know whether it is possible to finish a traditonal MSc in biochemistry/MD is possible in 4 years?

and do LiM students have to pay full tuition for both the medical program and graduate program concurrently?

So basically, you're saying you would finish your MSc in 1 year and then do the MD in the remaining 3 years, correct?

Highly unlikely but nothing is impossible. I personally only know one person who has finished a wet lab based MSc in 1 year and it was because they a) came into a project that was already well established and B) worked insanely hard over the next year. Otherwise, I would say...not going to happen.

You pay your grad school tuition when in grad school and your med school tuition when in med, not at the same time. I recently had both tuition amounts show up on my fees due in the fall (and it was something hilarious like $10500...not a fun surprise to wake up to in the morning!), but it was quickly adjusted just to reflect the grad school fees.

It's possible to finish a master's degree in a year if you work like a maniac, you don't have to take more than one or two courses, and you have really good luck with your research. But usually 18 months is the absolute minimum without going insane. I've heard of people finishing in a year, but I don't think I personally knew anyone who finished in less than 18 months. I do know someone who finished a PhD in 18 months, but she had been working in the same lab on related projects for both her undergrad and her master's. And i don't think she ever slept.

There's a few options if LIM interests you:

1) You can do your graduate degree before starting medical school (MSc or PhD).

2) Though I'm not sure if this is still a suggested option, but if you're yet to start graduate school, you can start medical school and take a break from medical school before your clerkship to venture off and follow your graduate degree.

But, as other have attested to, finishing a MSc in 1 year is extremely difficult - it not only depends on your ability to resist sleeping, but also on having a professor who shares your vision of completing quickly.

If you're seriously considering the LIM program, your best bet is to contact the program directly. There's a whole executive of students, as well as professor advisors (and a great admin assistant) who are excited to discuss the program with interested students.

Oh what I had initially thought was that there was time during your medical years to integrate research and that would allow you to finish some of the requirements for a master before ending/beginning with a full year of grad studies but I guess this isn't possible.
