panick
Hi, I would REALLY REALLY TRULY appreciate it if someone can give me honest opinion whether I should consider applying or just go for something else... I'm thinking of applying to UofT, McMaster, Queen's, and Western. Undergrad graduating November 2011 from UToronto, GPA: 3.82 (OMSAS) / 3.97 (best 2 years) / 3.90 (UofT) MCAT: Verbal 11 / Physical 10 / Bio 11 / Writing Q (wrote only once) EC: 3 student club activities, clinical shadowing, 1 publication, 1 research, hospital volunteer for 4 years, some marketing research job and waitress I feel that since things are sooooo competitive, if chances are likely that I won't be even considered for an interview, I'll just go for something else... Any idea? No trolling please... (BTW, stats show that Queen's has highest competition.....do you know why?)
aravis
your stats seem pretty solid to get an interview.. I'm not sure what's to fret about.

Any idea? No trolling please... (BTW, stats show that Queen's has highest competition.....do you know why?) You appear on paper to be competitive from what we know at this point (you hit this years levels). I am guessing the structure of your GPA over the years is what is stopping you from applying to Ottawa? Queens just has the fewest spots compared to the other bigger schools (100) Toroto and Mac have over twice that
Nobodycirclesthewagons
I can't guarantee what the interview cutoffs will be like for next year, but you would have received an interview from Western for this past year.
EBDOC15
Sounds like you're guaranteed an interview at UWO (unless they pull a Queen's) and should be competitive for other Ontario schools.
shikimate
Those are some good numbers. You should add few OOP schools and perhaps Ottawa to maximize your chance. At least on paper I don't see why you should be very worried (as your username suggests).
panick
thank you guys for your input! although i've got a feeling you are being nice and/or too optimistic... well, i only have half course each for organic/inorganic/biochemistry... and since i don't have any english credit, i'm only considering these four schools i mentioned (i've excluded american schools for the same reason) i was confused because despite of its small size, the number of applicants was unusyally high for Queen's... well for now, i like western for some reason i don't know...haha anyways, thanks for replies! but to be honest, i can't stop thinking that i'm far below the average... oh yes and another thing, since i switched my major so many times, i don't have any 400+ course... (i stayed in undergrad for too long, i had to graduate soon, didn't have time) highest level of couses i've taken are 300-levels. i know this would hurt, but how bad would it be? Nobodycirclesthewagons
For Western, they require that you take at least 300 level courses in 4th year. Anyway, I have a question about you staying in undergrad for so long. Did you take full courseloads?
panick
Make sure you've met Western's 60% rule before applying then. Otherwise they'll toss your app. I think you'll get a Queens interview, but it's not guaranteed. UofT and Mac are toss ups. Is your Ottawa GPA below 3.85? Because you should definitely apply there so long as you clear the academic cutoff. wait, wait what's 60%rule? and what about UofT and Mac? do they need 400-course to get in? and for ottawa, i think they need 2 full courses in chem, which i don't have... panick
You need two years with a GPA over 3.7 (or 3.75 depending on the applicant pool) with 30 credits in each, and 18 credits in each year (60%) must be at the correct year level. So, in second year 18 of those must be 2000 level courses or higher, and in 3rd/4th year, 18 have to be 3000 or 4000 level. Also, you need to have an honours (4 year) degree, or be receiving it in the year you apply. You could always apply to Ottawa and then drop the chem courses if you don't get an interview. You can take gen chem at your university and do orgo or biochem concurrently through athabasca. They only count years with at least 24 credits though. Your U of T GPA will probably be the same as your OMSAS then, unless you took summer courses. You won't qualify for the weighting formula. wow, thanks so much for kind reply! um, yeah i took lots of summer courses and the ones that dropped down my marks were during summer/part-time... that's why my UT gpa is higher... and now i dont know what to do with western... i stayed in undergrad for 6 years... panick
oh no...i only have 1 year with full course load... other years had 4.5 at most...:cries: and wgpa for ottawa is only 3.83... i guess im done for.. my apologies for spamming, but i really appreciate your help! ameltingbanana
3.83 isn't TERRIBLE for uOttawa, is it? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't their average 3.87 or something? You're not terribly far off, with great ECs and a really strongly worded application it's doable I think. Grain of salt - I'm an undergrad as well, and you might be better served posting in the uOttawa forum if you think that's where your best chance is. Best of luck, bud. Hmm....Having just one year with a full courseload may put you out of the running for Western. They require two years of full courseloads. Still, you seem to have shots at some other schools, and all it takes is one school to give you one interview. You can matriculate at only one school. Don't lose hope! If you hit the cut off in that year then you could still apply to Western. It is an option that has worked for others so I thought I should mention it.
