There is so much stuff to look at with a single application and it is very unlikely that you are going to get screened out solely on reporting a low childhood income (if I was on the Adcom, I would only read the essay and the sketch). You can easily cover it at interviews and such if it comes up. However, I am not sure if you should use it to claim underserved status.
