Anyone Considering Caribbean Medical School?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone;

Let’s cut to the chase! Right now I am a student at UofC and I am applying for 2011/2012 cycle. I am confident however I am not sure I will be able to get in this year.

I am 24 year old male and I am considering a Caribbean medical school. I haven't decided a specific one yet.

I am kind of scared about the whole thing and i want to ask if there is anyone that’s in the same position as me. If yes, we can do this together and i think it would remove considerable portion of anxiety.

There is a separate forum for "Caribbean-oriented students". That being said, 90% of people here would advise against it since I assume you're planning to come back to Canada and work. There are few people who are successful in matching and working in Canada, however these chances are very slim.

Is this your first time applying to Med school? Your chances will be better if you wait 1 or 2 years to boost your GPA and reapply again. Save the hassle of Caribbean and money in the long term.

That was me this year. I actually only just informed the carib school I won't be going. Got lucky and got in in Canada.

I applied twice in Canada and after the first year of rejections I figured I should have a backup. That being said coming back to Canada is very tough. Only about 20% of IMG's match and almost all of that is in FM.

I only considered SGU because they seem to be the best for doing rotations in the US and getting US experience. They are also quite good at having students do electives in Canada which help. Don't be discouraged about the Carib as some ppl do match in Orthopedics and Optho. Just it is hard.

If this is your first time applying maybe don't apply to the Carib. Try again next year if things don't go well this time. You can always get a job and travel.

Anyways, what I'm trying to say is don't do Carib right away unless you value one year that much.....you'd also be down 250k+ instead of about 80k.

here's a link for CaRMS about matching. Check out the IMG stats. Might help you make your choice. http://carms.ca/eng/operations_R1reports_11_e.shtml

not exactly sure why you posted this under UBC, but assuming you are in-prov for both B.C and Alberta (and you have the grades/mcat/extracurric)....I don't think you would need to apply to Caribbean schools at all. But again, i suppose its good to have backup's...i was gonna go to the Caribbean if it didn't work out this cycle.... and definitely choose the more well-known one's like SGU, if you ever end up there.........good luck!

ps- be confident that you will get in
