Do you have to be fluent in french to apply to Quebec med schools?

Im in Ontario and looking for some OOP options.

If you plan to apply to McGill, be ready to speak French during clerkship. 30-40% of your patients will be speaking French as their mother tongue.

If you do not master French, you'll have special French classes on Saturday morning.

Nooooo  I am applying to only McGill this cycle!

So what will happen if the resident insist on conversation with the patient in English instead of French?

Well you won't be able to understand your patient and he won't be able to understand you. A lot of people in Quebec, especially older patients, don't know any english at all...

We all have English courses in high school and cegep, and most of our medical textbooks are in english. Usually, pretty much every french med student is able to have an English conversation with a patient if he has too.

It's sad, but the oposite is not 100% true. A lot of anglophones that are actually doing their medical studies at McGill do have enormous difficulties to speak in French(mostly OOP/International students) Cegep students and IP do very well however.
