So just a little about myself, I am Egyptian born, I live in Winnipeg. My entire life I'v wanted to become a doctor but I haven't had anyone to really help and guide me towards the right path.

So I'm in my second year at the U of M, where I am hoping to finish a 4 year degree to apply afterwards to med. So my first year I took chem/bio/stats + some random electives, sorry to say but some problems at home caused me to complelely derail in my studying habits resulting in me getting an F in my first bio and a C in my first chemsitry. My GPA atm is a 2.5, but i know i am capable of a 4.0 +. I am now taking my second chem/bio and also have ochem/microbio in my second semester. I know in the U of M after 90+ credit hours they start to remove your worst credit hours.

So as an honest question do i still have a chance to get into med, if i buckle down and become the student i know i can be and get A - A+ 's in my remaining courses in 2 years while maintaining good extra ciric / volunteering, and the 15 worst hours being removed would abolish my horid first year?

I calculated if i could get a ( A ) average with my remaining courses at the U of M i could finish easily off with a 3.8 to 4.2 GPA ( 4.5 scale btw). If with this GPA along with a solid great score on my MCAT do i still have a fighting chance to get into med?

Any info/advice would be massivly appreciated. thx

Quite a number of non-traditional applicants come back to school for a second degree in their thirties after several careers and end up in medical school. You are only in your second year. Many people screw up one year during their undergrad due to various circumstances, and admission committee for a number of med school acknowledge this and allow you take your worse year or worst courses off GPA calculation. So you definitely have a chance if you are indeed the 4.0+ student you said you were.

Never give up on something that you can't go a day without thinking about.

Thanks a lot, i have a few questions if u dont mind =). What would you say is the 3 most important things you have found in your experience for studying for med. ( if you have completed med or just still working through it)? I know that's very broad but just a little insight would be great =)

Hey pharoah, I just wanted to say that you should never give up on something that you really want. I am also a second year but in a much more worse situation than you (first year GPA = 1.7). All I can tell you is that you have a much better shot than me and as long as there is a will, there is a way. That's what I told myself and we just need to work extremely hard from here on.

Keep in mind that some people here can be extremely discouraging. Don't listen to them and don't let them get to you. Good luck!

Here at U of M, MCAT is king. Just get over the 80-90th percentile for a solid shot in.
