Hey guys,

Final exams are approaching (good luck everyone!) and I'm kinda getting extremely nervous about one course. I did well on most of my midterms and anticipate an 80-90% range of grades once I finish my finals. However, the last midterm I wrote I got 51% in. There are only two evaluations, the midterm and the final, and I didn't drop it because I could not ask my parents to pay that extra $500 to take a 6th course next semester. I'm kinda realizing now that it might be a little possible to actually turn my mark around. This has happened before where I got a 56% on a midterm worth 30%, 80% on an essay worth 20% and 94% on the final to end with an 80. That's one of the things that influenced me to stay in this course. I'm going to need that 94% again...

If I do decide to drop it, how would an LWD on my transcript look like to Queen's, UWO, and Mac? I know better an LWD than a bad grade right?

Thanks so much!

Many schools after a point will let you drop a course but assign effectively a grade (a failure basically). That is just terrible for Ontario schools - it nukes your GPA for the entire year and beyond. Of course a bad grade also does the something I guess.

Now if you are before that point in time, dropping has no penalty at all other than you are not at the 5.0 credits you need for the year for most schools. This means that UWO won't consider the year unless you make up the missing course next term. You have less of a problem at Mac and Queens.

So I guess I should ask for your specific school at this point in time what grade does as a LWD get assigned to you? It is pretty late in the game right now - I am worried you are past the normal drop period.

LWD is withdrawal without penalty. Doesn't even get entered on OMSAS. Just make sure you make up for the full courseload.

ahh well that helps :) So many 3 letter acronyms

What school is this? I mean it is almost december - most schools I have been at (4 I guess at this point) had a cut of at the 6 or 8 week point for LWD. It seems we are way past that now(?)

LWD is at the University of Toronto. You can drop a class at any point before the fall drop date without it being entered on your academic record. If you drop after this date, but before classes end (Dec. 6 or 7 this year I think?), you'll get an LWD (late withdrawal without academic penalty) on your transcript instead.

wow that is late, and quite awesome then for U of T students!

I would drop that course and make it up next term. Don't let one bad course drag you down if at all possible. 500 dollars is a small price to pay to avoid the negative consequences :)

Yes, I'm at UofT. For us, we have until the last day of class to drop a course without academic penalty, but it shows up as LWD on your transcript.

Sorry, in my original post I said it's possible to turn my mark around, I actually meant to write impossible, lol. It's 100% my fault because I only spent the weekend studying for it since I had 4 midterms the week before it and I was incredibly tired and hadn't slept properly the entire week before (about 3 hours/night on a good night). Even though I managed to get 6 hours of sleep before the test, I was really exhausted during it and didn't even get the time to read a lot of the questions.

yeah, no worries - I wasn't familiar with U of T's policy - anyway if I were you I would drop the course, and make it up next term if you think that is possible and you can find an easy course next term to take to make up the distance :)
