Biostats (bio 2244) alternative?

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty sure Biology 2244 can be replaced by Stats 2141 (engineering stats) which is offered in the summer and will still count towards a module in BSc or BMSc; has anyone ever taken Stats 2141 and can comment on it, particularly if you took it in the summer?

Otherwise, does anyone have any other suggestions for alternatives other than the full year psych stats; perhaps a transfer credit from another university that can be taken online?

Thanks!

there's statistical sciences 2244 - "statistical sciences for science"... http://www.westerncalendar.uwo.ca/2011/pg963.html#47330 . i heard it was easy in past years but then they sort of revamped/re-evaluated and now it's supposed to be harder. you could ask around or something. or check out the https://www.ipb.uwo.ca/evaluation/index.php site... and look it up there.

Biostats and stats for science are the exact same course now. Their lecture hours overlap because it's the same class with at the same time with the same profs.

Terrible terrible course btw.

Even the revamped one was a joke. Biostats is the worst.

Biostats wasn't that bad. You just have to make sure you understand the content/the concepts and not just the calculations. The prof isn't as bad as everyone says. Sometimes he explains things poorly, but you can go to his office hours and then he is usually clearer. Personally, I did all the readings ahead of time and ended with a 96. If you really focus on the concepts, it's definitely doable.

I second this evaluation. To be honest, a lot of people don't pay attention in class and leave everything to the last minute - and THAT's why they do badly. As long as you work on this class as hard as your other bio med classes - you should do fine.

Also, his office hours are great. I found him to be a great one-on-one professor.

For anyone who has recently taken the course, how essential is access to the supposedly "required" ebook? I'm in the middle of arranging to buy the textbook along with printed ebook notes from the previous semester, but is there any crucial information I would be missing by not having the ebook as well?

our class average was 52 on the midterm before they gave us 10% each. i feel like there's something wrong with the teaching or the test at that point, rather than the ~200? students in any one section... i guess it could be some sort of crazily-pervasive self-fulfilling prophecy?

So the average was a 62. How is that any different from a rough orgo exam?

the original average was 52. people regularly complain when the class average is that low. it may not be hard relative to so-called "hard classes", but, on an "absolute" scale, it's still bad. it's still one of the hard classes, and hence something to be unhappy about.

There's always the people who do good. When you have a 52 percent average being bumped up 10 percent to 62, something seems to be wrong. That was lower than the orgo I final exam average last year, where 1 of the 2 sections had a 58% average.

I actually believe orgo was alot easier and averages were higher than 62...orgo wasn't that bad at all, stats on the other hand is another question...

Nothing is wrong with his exams, just you won't understand what you are reading LOL

I took engineering stats last year, but not in the summer. However the prof I had was fired at the end of last year, so no chance that you could have the same prof, so I'm probably not much help.

I found the course ok, my mark was slightly above my average, but had some stats knowledge from high school data management. Most people did not enjoy the course (although that could have been because it was a night class). Miderm average was low 60s.
