JaneDoh
((I posted this on sdn but the thread was closed)) so,like the majority of people here,i would like to get in medschool but Im starting to think it might not be for me... Here is my situation: I am currently doing a 3year bsc in biology. My first year was alright (3.3 gpa) but my 2nd year really sucked (1.7). My cumulative gpa is sumtin like 2.4ish... Anyway so now im in my last year and i dont know what to do..i will try to raise my gpa to 3 but im not even sure its possible to do in a year...i was planning to do a masters degree maybe in PT but i just realized i need at least a 3.0 to apply, so im pretty much screwed...whats my best option? Taking a 4th year of undergrad to raise my grades to enter PT (and after PT apply to medschool)? start another bachelor (get high grades this time and apply to med afterwards)? What do u guys think? Thanks JD
medigeek
What brought you down in 2nd year so much? A 3.3 to a 1.7 is a massive drop...
JaneDoh
Switch to a 4 year program, ace your 3rd and 4th year, and you'll have a shot at UWO, Queens, and maybe UofT and UofC depending on weighting. And ace the MCAT! Is this really my only option? dont feel like starting another bsc...my parents will kill me lol
JaneDoh
What brought you down in 2nd year so much? A 3.3 to a 1.7 is a massive drop... Good question...I can't really blame it on anyone else or something else, I wasnt sick, didnt suffer from depression,no one died in my family,...I really don't know. I like biology but I think it's just the lack of motivation. It is really hard for me to invest a lot of effort in something when i don't know where i'm going. It seems like ''unconsciously'' I do my best only when I have clear goals set (if that even makes sense). Now I still don't know what I want to really do for a career but since i'm in probation with the university my motivation is : dont get kicked out of the university lol
JaneDoh
What? No, continue on in your current program, but do the 4 year version instead of the 3 year. Most med and grad schools won't admit you without a 4 year degree anyways. So let's say I get an epiphany and get a 4.0 for my fourth year and manage to get a 3.00 cgpa after the 4years .My transcript will still be filled with Cs and Ds (don't have any Fs ...yet) from my previous years...those will be a problem when applying to grad school, no? I am having the same problem, always been an good student but now Im in my fourth year with a 2.1 and I feels like the end of the world. I dont even know what Iam going to do with that low of GPA. Med school is a FAR way and Im even doubtful of getting in Masters. If I end up with a B/B+ in my last year, is there any chance of me getting in? I havent done my MCATs yet and Im freaking out about what Im going to do

I havent done my MCATs yet and Im freaking out about what Im going to do For medical school, I don't see any chance of you getting in with a 2.1 GPA and looking at a B/B+ this year. I mean if you felt you could get an "A" average this year with a 3.8+ GPA for the year and then took a 5th year and did the same, then sure. But, I don't see any point in worrying about the MCAT, unless you can pull off a really solid year first. As for grad school, I know very little, so hopefully some one with experience can comment, but I am guessing if you find someone who wants to be your supervisor that maybe there is a chance, but I wouldn't expect funding. I have a friend who was in such a position - he had a GPA that would normally be too low for grad school consideration, but he has an amazing talent at one thing so he had a couple supervisors wanting him badly and easily found an alternative source of funding which is significantly higher than most grad students could expect. astrogirl
There's no such thing as a GPA too low for grad school. There are always people and places who want slaves, I mean grad students, badly enough that they won't care about your GPA. Plus whoever said above that you typically need a 4 year degree, not a 3 year one is right. That's usually the case. That being said, the best way to raise your grades for med school is usually more undergrad, not grad school. Go over to the non-trad forum and look at the thread about med school policies for grad degrees so you get a really good idea about whether graduate grades even count at the schools you want to apply to. bloh
1. Finish current BSc. 2. Start a new degree 3. Be serious If you don't think #3 is doable, go to the Caribbean.

If he was to start a new degree, maybe it be better for him to start now? Maybe get credit for his 1st year courses science courses (if theyre not that bad). And stack up on bird courses. JaneDoh
1. I'm from quebec, so no mcat required 2. Not sure the 4 year degree thing applies here because of cegep 3.Most ug degrees in quebec universities are only 3years 4. My cunumative gpa at the moment is around 2.4, not 1.7 ( this was my gpa for the second year of university) 5. I'm not dead serious or committed to med school. I want to keep my horizons open, I'm open to a plan B ( was hoping for pt maybe) 6.Some members pointed out that my ug grades will follow me forever, so even if I do a masters it would not count. So my understanding is that I absolutely have to do another undergrad degree. My question is, does this new bachelor has to be a bsc? Could a do, say, a ba in anthropology? astrogirl
Doesn't have to be a BSc. You can do any undergrad degree you want, just as long as somewhere along the way you have the prereqs for the schools you're applying to.
