sportsfan12
Hey guys I have to apply soon and I'm wondering what would be a better decision University of Western Kinesiology or Biomed? If anyone goes to these two programs, it would be cool if you could explain what you do in each program. I'm also curious as to what the admission requirements for each program is? Like what grade would almost guarantee you entree into both programs. I'm also curious about Western in general. How is the campus/students.etc. Thanks a lot! silverwhale9
I would say aim for soup. I always like soup before my main course. Kidding. My serious answer is I know people in both programs, and have only heard good things about them both. I'm sure there are people on here who can answer your specific questions. Western in general is great in my opinion. Beautiful campus, nice gym facilities, lots of extracurricular clubs, and a large course selection compared to smaller universities. And I guess people will tell you downtown London is a big selling point because of all the bars and stuff ... not my thing, but definitely a plus to some people. Just make sure to tour the campus of all universities you apply to, that was what helped me decide.
aaronjw
Can't speak of the program but Western and London in general is fantastic. Easily one of my fav cities that i have lived. I've never heard anyone complain about their experiences at Western in terms of atmosphere.
phosgenic
I was also having some trouble choosing between the two last year... first off let me say that for either of the programs go to Western. Everything about uni life seems to be in a nice balance here. I myself ended up choosing Kin for a couple of reasons... mainly because I played elite level hockey for 14 years and my interests in medicine are loosely tied to sports. Now that I'm in the program, even though I've only completed one semester, it really feels like Kin is easier... the environment is a lot more relaxed, there are a lot less cutthroat premeds in my Kin courses and with some decent work 90s shouldn't be a problem. Biomed isn't much more difficult I'd say but you have to work harder to get those 90s. In the end just pick which one you find more interesting, Kin is going to be more about sports, the human body, and its movement, whereas biomed is more abstract science stuff, not nearly as practical... but that doesn't mean it's bad. Razer
If you were wondering about "Shoe-in grades", the grade 12 cutoffs this year were 83% for kin and 85.5% for bio-med. I don't see them going up next year. Western's campus itself is fantastic, but i can't really give you much of a comparative opinion; i haven't seen any other campus. Bio-med in first year is very general, you take biology, chemistry, physics, math, and an elective. I haven't heard enough about kin to compare, but science programs aren't that tough, just different from high-school. (You earn your marks primarily through exams)
aaronjw
I've only ever gone to Western and currently at york but have been to Queens, U of T, Ryerson, Laurier, Carleton, Ottawa U, Guelph, Waterloo, Yale, Harvard, Columbia and North Western. From a campus perspective, UWO reminds me a lot of Yale. Very green, old classic buildings and just a sense of being in a special place. Yale campus is amzing btw *sigh*

Let'sGo1990
Kin first year is jokes, and the environment is pretty relaxed. Not as much competition. Phys 1020/1021 is the exact same course as the second year phys 2130. Same lectures, same profs, same exams, same slides, etc. Only difference is the first years get a free 10 percent through tutorials. I switched out of kin after first year though since in second year they make you take sports classes, which sound fun but honestly felt like a waste of tuition $$$. All my buddies told me second year was pretty simple too. Biomed/med sci has a decent amount of keeners - as is expected with at any university's typical "premed" program. In retrospect, knowing what I know about medical school admissions policies, I feel like I'd probably have gone into something like health sciences. Let'sGo1990
^Good post^ Btw how do you mark you in sports classes? Not entirely sure. I believe you're assigned a percentage grade based on participation and how good you are at the sport (to an extent). Come to think of it, I heard a couple of them are pretty tough markers.
