Hello all,

Due to personal problems and other things I did quite poorly in my first semester of 1st year life science at UofT. I got an A- in bio120, a B in mat135, an A or A+ in a seminar and a B or B- in chm138. This gives a ~3.x OMSAS gpa where x is quite low (3-5). I'm taking 6 courses next semester to have 5fces by the end of the year and I'm confident that I can perform very well since everything else has been sorted out.

I now realize that getting in UT md in 3rd yr is impossible for me due to my low gpa (even if i get 4s till then it wont be enough) so I guess I can only really shoot for 4th year. UofT med is my ultimate goal and truly what I will be striving for.

My question to all you fellow premeds/meds is, how common is this low of a gpa for students making med school and more specifically uoft med? Do they all literally get straight As or is it okay to get a B or C here and there?

Also I really want to research this summer for the CSB department. If I do really well in BIO130 will the prof or supervisor disregard my crappy first term or is there absolutely no way of me getting a research position this year.

What are your opinions on my situation? How screwed am I? (I'm pretty depressed right now and really need some solid advice)

I'm in the exact same boat as you. I have a B in MAT135, A- in PSY100, SOC101 and CHM138 and a B- in BIO120. Hey how'd you find the bio exam?

Anyways you still do have a chance for making med school after 3rd year if u get 4.0 the rest of the way. Don't wanna be mean but don't bank your hopes in getting into med school after 3rd year. It's uber-competetive, much more difficult than getting into med school after 4th year which by itself is also very difficult. You sound like you want to go into laboratory medicine after 1st year? DONT GO! There nothing wrong with getting into med school after 4 year anyways, its such a great accomplishment, it's just that you'll be more stressed out in 4 year as compared to the kids who got in after 3rd year.

If you're really that worried about getting good grades study now, during the winter vacation, like me :). Which courses do u have btw second semester, and which seminar did u take?

I have CHM139, BIO130, MAT136, SOC101 and CCR199, Technology and the Human. I'm pretty confident i can do well too second semester. I have fridays off :D. Any advice for the seminar?

If you get 4.0 in the other 6 courses you have second semester you would have a GPA of 3.76 first year. Assuming u get 4.0 in the next 2 years you would have a cGPA of 3.92, which i think is good enough to get in after 3rd year. i'm not sure whether they would drop your lowest grade or 3 FCE since you have a full course load. Assuming that they would you would have a GPA of around 3.95. I know they'l do it for you after 4 year, but I'm not sure whether they do it for kids apply after their 3rd year.

To be honest, like I said I couldn't do much studying in the first semester, as dumb as that sounds. For bio, I didn't go to lectures and just listened to them at a really quick rate the night before the test/exam. I didn't do any of the required readings and I ended up finding the exam pretty easy, except for the required reading questions and there were quite a few of them :(.

Regarding my POST, I don't have much interest in LMP right now. Im more interested in Neuroscience/Psychology (psychobiology, really but they don't offer that). I've been told to always follow my interests rather than where the prestige is.

Seminars are tons of fun! They don't have exams and require almost no studying, which explains why I was able to do well in mine. Just make sure you're involved in the material. Discuss, ask questions and actually think about what's being presented.

UofT won't drop courses for students who apply in their 3rd year. But after 3rd year, ie during 4th year, they will drop your lowest 3.0 credits. After 4th year, they will drop your lowest 4.0 credits.

I'd assume 3.92 is good enough to get you in after 3rd year too, but when you apply to get in after 3rd year, don't they only look at your first 2 years GPA only?

Keep in mind that if you aim to get in after third year, the adcoms only have 2 years of grades to go on since they won't have your third year grades at that point. [(3.76+4.00)/2]=3.88. As someone above has said, you also can't drop courses with only 2 years worth of marks to go on, so 3.88 is as high as it gets. This isn't bad at all but it is not especially high either, 3.88-3.90 is the published average admission GPA of UofT medicine.

I guess 1 bad semester can really kill your cGPA lol, i'm not trying to say 3.88 is bad but considering that someone gets 4.0's after that one bad semester it just doesn't feel right having a 3.88. I'm pretty sure you can take summer school courses as well to boost your GPA first year. Since you have 5 FCE first year you can take 2 more half courses during the summer to boost your GPA. I suggest you take socio, the readings are light and the tests are a breeze if you study for them, well for me at least. I'm not sure whether you'll get an easy prof, we had Robert Brym and he was pretty easy lol.

So how does it work when you apply in 4th year? Do they only see your grades for up to year 4?

I'm not sure, but i think they use all four years? If you take an extra year in university, a fifth year how does the cGPA calculated? Do you just add an extra year and divide by 5 instead of 4, assuming that each uni takes every year equally like mac and u of t.

Pretty much. But dividing by 5 instead of 4 assumes that you take same number of credits every year including 5th year, not more or less.

However, if during the 5th year, say you took only 3.0 credits, you just add up the number of credits you take in your 5th year and divide by the total number of credits you have. UofT weighting will still apply for the first 4 years, as long as 5 FCEs were taken during the first 4 years.
