--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------In any type of society whether it’s democratic, communistic, or socialist, conversions are required to promote improvements of the existing form of society. These social conversions are meant to bring positive impacts on society and to eliminate any existing event that is unfit for the current form of society. However, these social changes are sometimes restrained by the people in power, because these changes may threat the powerful people's benefits, or the changes may be viewed as harmful by the conservatives. Thus, to bring out revolutions that benefit the people in the existing society, a great leader is needed to rally the people, who are urging of changes. For example, Martin Luther King, Jr. is one well-known great leader of social revolution. King is known for his prominent leadership in the African-American Civil Rights Movement and his use of nonviolent methods to bring changes upon the United States society. A number of famous speeches were done by King in order to promote the changes against racial segregation and racial discrimination, and to rally the African-Americans, who are urging of those changes. King finally succeeded and won the Noble Peace Prize for his great leadership and for the benefits he brought among the U.S. society. Thus, a great leader is needed to bring the people together for positive social conversions.

On the other hand, when majority of the public is requiring changes in the existing society, a leader may not be essential. Take the large protest known as Arab Spring as an example. The revolutionary wave of protests occurring in the Arab world was so strong, in which rulers in power were forced to settle with the conversions their people is demanding for. Numerous factors have led to the protests, including issues such as dictatorship, human right violations, government corruption, and extreme poverty. A major slogan of the protesters in the Arab world has been "the people want to bring down the regime". Protests have met violent responses from authorities however, the protest group is so large that it cannot be easily controlled by the government forces. As a result, revolutions occurred in most countries in the Arab world as the public demanded.

Therefore, whether a leader is required for revolutions that bring greater benefits for more people in society depends on the dominance of the group that's demanding for conversions. If the change is required by the minority of the public, such as the case of the African-Americans, then a greater leader like Martin Luther King, Jr. is needed for their success. However, if the majority of the people that dominant the society is demanding for conversions, then a great leader is not essential. Since, the people in power are obviously going to face protests and other challenges, due to their ignorance of the public's needs such as, the many countries that's involved in the huge protest known as Arab Spring. Thus, leader is required for the minority of the public to speak up for their wills, and a leader is not essential when the government's current policy is against the favor of the majority.

In business, using a successful method for too long may lead to failure

Although there are many different industries in business, they all can relate back to one common goal - profit. A successful business will attempt to maximize profits by implementing a strategy to optimize revenue producing venues and minimizing operating expenses. However, such a method of making profit may have a short life cycle. As in all business life cycles, there will come a time when a product will become obsolete. Thus, even with a successful method, there may come a time when change is necessary or it will lead to net losses. Take for example the once successful communications giant Research in Motion (RIM), most famous for their line of smart phones, Blackberry, and the BBM functionality. This company continued use of their method over due its profitable and successful life cycle. While they continued to stick by their Blackberry smart phones, each successive product had little changes from the previous product. Thus, as other competitors adapted to the changing demands of the open market, consumers began to substitute the Blackberry products for others such as Apple's Iphone, or Samsung's S series. RIM's business method was successful, but its extended usage has led the business to its current all time low.

In other industries, where the demands are less dynamic, a successful method may be timeless in its use. Such a business may be able to continue a business strategy for extended periods of time without failure. Take for example the food and restaurant businesses, which cater to consumers' demand for a pleasant place to indulge in food. A successful chain such as Swiss Chalet has implemented the same business model over many years and yet remains profitable. This is because in the food and restaurant business, client's demands will almost timelessly revolve around good food, good value, and comfort. As long as a business can continue to provide those essentials, they will continue to be successful.

Therefore, the question that remains is: when is it that using a business method for too long results in failure? One of the main contingencies is the nature of the industry the business is in. A dynamic industry that is constantly changing requires business to keep up with the new innovative ideas of its competitors. RIM was innovative in their product at one time, but as time passed, other businesses were able to surpass RIM with a myriad of new and improved products of their own. The technology industry requires businesses to constantly be aware of such innovations and adopt new business methods because the field changes rapidly. However, food and restaurants are a staple of human and their history, thus a successful method of business from the past may still be successful in the present and in the future. As long as the restaurant is able to provide the quintessential needs of comfort, and good food at a reasonable cost, consumers will be happy to return. It is evident that there are times when a business model must change to adapt to the changes of the market, however, some preferences remain timeless and universal.

In business, using a successful method for too long may lead to failure

Businesses thrive upon having clear objectives and a method or model to guide these objectives. However sometimes a business that relies heavily on the same successful method for too long can be detrimental. Take for instance Kodak, a leader and pioneer in photography technology that rose to eminence from its trademark Kodak film. However as digital photography started to gain popularity, Kodak introduced digital technologies but continued to focus on their trademark film and experienced losses. This was their downfall and they filed for bankruptcy early in 2012. Therefore by continually relying on their successful model of marketing their strength in film, Kodak failed to adapt and take advantage of the changing market demands for digital media. The market demands of the 1970s are not the same as the markets today.

On the other hand, continually using a successful method may not always lead to failure. Walmart is a well known household name as the company has built its reputation for outselling many of its competitors to provide affordable goods. Walmart has continually grown and many businesses also complain about the company's presence in local communities and cities as the local and smaller businesses are unable to successful compete with the giant. Walmart's business method of offering quality low-priced items is likely to enable its continual growth and success as many citizens would rationally want to pay less than is necessary for groceries and other household necessities. Therefore so long as other competitors offer similar products at higher prices, Walmart's lower price guarantee will be likely to attract most prospective customers.

Businesses must find ways to attract and retain customers in order to thrive and succeed. What determines whether using a successful method for an extended period will lead to failure or not depends on if the products cater to our needs or wants. Should the products cater to our wants, such as Kodak's technologies for photography, then a business's use of the same method may lead to failure since society's demands and wants evolve and change over time and therefore businesses must adapt to these changes. However should the business products pertain to needs, such as groceries or basic household products offered by Walmart, then its successful method of reduced prices will enable its continued success as customers rationally want to obtain necessities at minimal cost. It is important for businesses to recognize and develop appropriate business methods depending on the products and services offered.

Thanks Raymond, I've really appreciated your feedback :)

In business, using a successful method for too long may lead to failure

Describe a specific situation in which continuing to use a successful method might not lead to failure. Discuss what you think determines when using a successful business method for too long leads to failure.

The primary goal of a business is to ensure a stable flow of revenue and be able to make a profit. This allows for cash flow into the business and determines the survival of the business in the short-term as well as long-term. Businesses use various different methods to secure a steady flow of revenues including creating new and innovative products, establishing a brand through marketing strategies and many others. In business, using a successful method that has been tested and tried over a long period of time may lead to failure since it overlooks the changing needs of the customers and competition in the market. This is especially true for businesses that thrive on fulfilling the wants of the customers by selling non-essential products and services because for such products and services, the customer may easily turn to other similar products/services or easily change his/her wants to a different type of product. For example, Research in Motion (RIM) is a well-known technology giant in Canada that produces blackberry devices. It’s stocks have recently crashes to a all-time low of $7.29 in comparison to $140 in 2005. Critics from the Los Angelos Technology and Economics Bureau had creditted such losses on the fact that RIM has been using a business method that has been successful in the past but over the long-run, it has led to the company’s failure. RIM is following a simple method of releasing new products in order to combat any negative effects on the company’s economic state. In fact, RIM has been using this method since the very beginning of its existence but such an approach fails to acknowledge the ongoing changes in the attitudes and demands of the customers and the changing competition in the market. As a result, experts from the Los Angelos Technology and Economics Bureau claim that such an approach is not sufficient to prevent the company from failing.

However, it is not always necessarily true that using a successful model for too long will lead to failure of a business. Use of a sucessful model by a business or organization that provides essential goods and services in order to fulfill the needs of the customers does not lead to failure. In this case, customers rely on the goods or services for their daily functioning and can not easily switch to other similar products/services or easily change their needs. For example, due to the increased numbers of dual income families in Toronto since the 1990’s, there has been an increased demand for daycare services. In order to fulfill such needs of families in Toronto, the provincial and municipal governments have used the model of subsidized funding where the parents are required to pay a portion of the fees while the government covers the rest of the cost. The model of subsidized funding for public services has been used by the Canadian government on a fedeal, provincial and municipal scale since the 1950’s. It is a tried and tested model that has been successful for other public services such as senior homes and disability centres. As a result, the use of this successful model by the government in the long haul for the provision of essential services has led to wide acceptance and success of various subsidized public services, including day care services in Toronto.

In conclusion, whether or not using a successful model for too long leads a business to failure depends on the kinds of products and services the business provides. If the business is selling non-essential goods and services to fulfill the wants of the customers, using a successful model for too long can lead the business into failure since it fails to acknowledge the changing dynamics of the demands of the customers and the competition on the market, as seen in the case of RIM’s crashing stocks due to following the same approach and business model since the company’s existence. In contrast, if the business is selling an essential product or service that the customers need, following a successful business model for too long will not lead to failure as seen in the case of subsidized daycare funding in Toronto. In this case, subsidization is a tried and tested business model that has been used by the Canadian government since the 1950’s. It is well accepted by the public and when applied to the delivery of essential goods and services that fulfill the needs of the customer, it has led to success in the long run.

In business, using a successful method for too long may lead to failure.

In a world that is always changing, reusing ideas and reusing similar methods can lead to failure. We live in a world where we always want something to be "new" and "different". A prime example of this concept is the iphone. Every year a new iphone is sold. Is the reason a new iphone is sold because Apple has made a better and much improved version of the current iphone? No, it is simply because the consumer doesn't want their old and stale iphone; they want something new. This example is the underlying reason why using the same method over an over again leads to failure. The consumer relates repetitiveness and similiarity with antiquity and diminished quality.

The same prevalent theme of using the same successful method for too long can lead to failure is seen in the music industry as well. In the early 1990's, boy bands were starting up and were becoming very successful. However, when the 2000's hit, their popularity greatly diminished. Now in 2012, even though boy band popularity is at the lowest, there are still many recording groups who are willing to sponsor new boy bands which only leads to failures. What was once a successful method, investing money in a boy band, is nothing but a successful failure today.

However, using the same successful method does not always lead to failure. An old expression says: "When something is rolling, stick with it", and that is exactly what McDonalds has done. Their recipe for success has been a standard and non-changing one for over thirty years: Sell cheap food that can be made fast and efficiently. With over one billion people served worldwide one can be sure that McDonalds has endured a lot of success.

Determining if using a successful method for too long may lead to failure greatly depends on what type of business you are involved in. In a business where "new" and "better" is what is always strived for, reusing the same methods is bound to lead to detrimental effects. Such business sectors are the cellphone industry, automobile industry, computer industry and etc. On the flip side, when considering aspects of life that can not truly be improved, using the same successful method over and over again does not lead to failure. Food has been a staple on Earth for millions of years, and not much has changed on how we want our food. When we are hungry we want are food now, and because food is a neccesity, it better be cheap. This is exactly the formula that has worked for many years and that will keep on working. In the food industry, if the consumer can acquire his food cheaply and swiftly, success will always trump failure.

In business, using a successful method for too long may lead to failure

Describe a specific situation in which continuing to use a successful method might not lead to failure. Discuss what you think determines when using a successful business method for too long leads to failure.

One of the most important objectives of a business is to be successful. Many businesses spend a great deal of time and money to develop a business method that can bring success to the company. Once a particular business method, defined as the way a company conducts their operations (including how a company desgins and markets their products), is found to be successful, it would seem intuitive that the business should not "fix something that isn't broken." However, there have been instances where a successful method being used for too long may lead to the failure of the business. For instance, the company Research in Motion (RIM), the developers of the "Blackberry" line of mobile phones, has been recently facing financial difficulty after many years of being one of the most successful mobile phone producers. When the Blackberry phones where first released in the mid-2000s, they revolutionized mobile communication with their instant messaging system, known as BBM. This line of phone was especially popular in the business community, and soon became one of the most popular mobile phones in America. Along with their success, RIM's stock prices soared to all-time highs of above $50. RIM's Blackberry product line, with their revolutionary BBM messenging system proved to be a very successful business method. Considering the success of their original product, RIM did not make any significant changes to their Blackberry products, beyond minor product and software updates. However, after the release of products such as the Apple iPhone and Google Android cell phones in that late 2000s, Blackberry saw their market share fall significantly. Many technology critics attributed this delcine in market share to Blackberry's inability to adapt to the ever changing market with new phone desgins and new software. Eventually, RIM's stock fell to below $10, exemplifying how using a succesful business method for too long can lead to failure.

However, continuing to use a successful business method might not always lead to failure. For instance, the toy company Lego, has kept the same basic product design for over 50 years. The reason that Lego has been able continue to be a successful business selling toy bricks that haven't changed their basic desgin since they were first released, is that their unique product faces few major competitiors. From the vibrant colors of the bricks, to the interlocking system, Lego produces a toy that few toy companies replicate. As such, when a child wants to purchase a building-block toy, they often find that a Lego product is their only option. Due to the fact that Lego has such a strong control of the toy building-block market, the Lego company can dictate how their business operates, rather than than the consumer. As such, Lego's toy building blocks have not changed in product style for over 50 years, but still continue to be one of the most popular toy building blocks on the market.

It seems that what determines whether using a successful business method for too long leads to failure is the market environment. In a highly competitive market, such as the market which Blackberry faced with both Apple and Google having introducing their own mobile phones, a company must constantly change their methods, especially their products, in order to adapt to the market. If a company fails to adapt to the market, and continues to follow the same business method, the other competitiors will gain a larger market share, leading to the failure of a business. However, if a company is in a market with little competition, such as the toy building-block mkaret and Lego, the company can continue to use the same successful business method, without endangering the business. As Lego produces a relatively unique product in a market that faces no similiar competition, they have maintained the same design of their toy over many years, while still being a successful company. Therefore, in the business world, the success or failure of a company depends more on the market in which they are in, rather than the business method in itself.

Describe a specific situation in which continuing to use a successful method might not lead to failure. Discuss what you think determines when using a successful business method for too long leads to failure.

A successful business means to be able to expand the corporation and gain profit. This is what is seen in our capitalist society today. Today, doing business means to utilize whatever method to get the most possible return. However, this may not always turn out successful in the long run. For example, a common practice in business is privatization of public services. In Melbourne, London, where they have privatived transit systems, we saw disastrous effects. Privatization led to massive worker layoffs and drops in workers' wages. This method has lead to transit services failures at the expense of taxpayers and commuters. Privatization leads to the overall expansion in profit in the pockets of private owners and the very few leaders at the top who control this business. However, it fails to account for the workers and service that it entails, leading to failure.

On the other hand, continuing to use a method like building an education savings plan are extremely effective and successful business investments. The benefits of RESP in business is to start accumulating money for a child's post-secondary education. The contributions grow quickly, since the Canadian Government also offers a Canada Education Savings Grant. By registering for an RESP, in the long-term the child can easily receive financial relief for their studies, leading to the ability to obtain education and a future career.

So where can we draw the line between whether a successful method will lead to failure or not? This will depend on the level at which the business will benefit. Leaning towards neoliberal methods, private company owners are interested in maximizing profit to obtain gains at whatever the cost, even if it means to lose customers and services. However, businesses that revolve around common householders such as parents are not interested in such matter, but rather lean towards saving for their children's education or mortgage. Thus, there is a fine line between how a business can bring about failure or success depending on the level of the investor.

Thanks Raymond!

I was also wondering what you thought of using common examples. I see many of us have already used RIM and I'm sure many more will and was wondering how that would hurt us in the eyes of a marker. Should I be striving for more unique examples? Much Appreciated

In the rapidly changing society we live in today, cutting edge technology and ideas can become obsolete in the blink of an eye and markets can disappear overnight. From a business’s prospective, reliance on a single successful method or product can result in the brand’s rapid decline. For instance, not long ago, Research in Motion (RIM) enjoyed tremendous prosperity thanks to their strong enterprise focused devices. As a result of focusing on business devices, RIM neglected the consumer sides of their product line such as entertainment and social media. With the chokehold on enterprise market share, RIM didn’t see the need to diversify and allocated the majority of their efforts accordingly. However, as the field changed to a point where competitors were able to field competitive alternatives in enterprise, RIM saw its market share and stock prices plummet drastically. Many analysts now suspect the company will be sold, its demise caused by reliance on a successful method for too long.

On the other hand, change for the sake of change may be just as disasterous to a company. A company may develop a signature method for which they are known and loved. Consumers come to expect this product and failure to deliver could cause a negative reaction and loss of business. An example of such a situation is Coca-Cola. Based on a secret formula, Coca-Cola developed a large customer base inspiring brand loyalty, distinguishing them from their competitors, and providing economic success. Then, the decision was made to deviate from the successful, tried and true formula and Coca-Cola released New Coke. Public reaction was overwhelmingly negative as customers felt betrayed and Coca-Cola lost much of the brand loyalty they once enjoyed. The company was forced to backtrack to Coke Classic in order to regain the success they previously saw. In this case it was not using a method for too long that lead to failure, but deviating from said method.

In determining whether a company should change a successful method to avoid failure it is important to consider the industry in which the business operates. A new or dynamic field required that its business constinuously adapt to survive, but in an established and static industry, a company which enjoys success is likely to continue to do so based on a successful product. In the case of Research in Motion, they compete in a technological field fueled by research and development. In such a field, success is research and development driven, with newer being equated to better. RIM’s failure to change its methods, even though successful, have led to it’s demise. Alternately, Coca-Cola’s food and beverage industry is old and well established, with fairly few new developments in the field. Consumers expect a consistent product and by sticking to a successful method Coca-Cola is able to enjoy continued success.

In business, using a successful method for too long may lead to failure

Describe a specific situation in which continuing to use a successful method might not lead to failure. Discuss what you think determines when using a successful business method for too long leads to failure.

When a business discovers a method that is proven to make them the most profit, they will always stick to that strategy since that is the safest thing to do. However, by continuing to operate in the same way without adapting for changes, a successful method can eventually become obsolete. The US auto industry boomed in the 1920s and the company General Motors became a giant in business world by following the same business model for almost a century. GM's operated on making large vehicles that has an abundance of power but lacks fuel efficiency. For most of the time, their vehicles were a hit with the American public because of the good economy and the low price of oil. Their product line over the years did not change, even though the market has changed and the price of oil grew exponentially. As cheaper competitors came onto the market, GM maintained the price of their vehicles. GM did not adapt to this change and continued with their successful method of business. As a result, their sales steadily decreased due the the price of oil and the economic downturn in the 2000s caused their sales to plummet and forced the company into bankrupcy.

Some companies have managed to maintain the same business method for a long period of time by appealing to the most basic market. McDonald's has been around for more than 50 years and continue to grow in size today. Their business model has always been offering the cheapest food on the market. Even as competitors came onto the scene, McDonalds always managed to keep its prices below that of the competition. Because of the cheap price of its food, McDonalds manages to increase business even if there are competitors on the scene or if the economy changes. By sticking to their simple yet effective business method, McDonalds manages to avoid any negative impacts on their business.

A business method that relies heavily on certain economic conditions to remain is much more likely to fail than one that is not affected by economic changes. GM's business method of selling medium-price, heavy gas using vehicles did not remain successful when the price of oil increased and the economy took a downturn. The target audience shifted to the competitor offering products more suitable for the current economic situation. McDonalds, however, maintains a successful method of maintaining the lowest price that is not easily affected by any economic changes. No matter the economic circumstances, McDonalds remained successful in business by following their principle.

In business, using a successful method for too long may lead to failure

Every business has its own business model which outlines the method it uses to design, market and sell their products. Each company hopes to develop a business method that will allow them to rise to success, and earn a lot of revenue. However, in an era of fast growth and change, using the same method for too long without adaptation may only lead to failure. For example, in the late 1990’s – a time when research in the telecommunications and internet industry was booming, the Canadian company Nortel was huge and incredibly successful. Their business model consisted of pushing out more advanced technologies than any other company, like their 10G DWDM network, which could carry many times for information at a much faster rate than the 2.5G networks other companies in the same field were producing. However, to sustain such fast development, Nortel also relied on heavy investment and spending. This method worked well during the industry boom because investors were willing to supply the mass amounts of money Nortel required, and buyers were willing to pay a high cost to obtain the products. Unfortunately, the internet business did not grow as quickly as predicted, and in the early 2000’s the telecom boom ended. Suddenly, information communication at the level which Nortel was producing was no longer in demand; its cash flow from investors was cut off, and customers were no longer buying. Instead of changing their business model to adapt to the times, however, Nortel proceeded with their previous method of overspending to produce advanced technologies. This method quickly led to their downfall because they no longer had the funding to support it. So in this case, Nortel used their business method, which was successful during the telecommunications boom, for too long after it ended. They failed to adapt to changing times and demands, and it led to their eventual bankruptcy.

However, sometimes using a successful business method for a long time will not lead to a business’ failure. This is especially true for companies that offer products which are continually in demand, and the demand does not change too much over time. Walmart, one of the most successful stores in the world, has been using a consistent business model since its birth. A large part of its business model surrounds the goal of providing customers with everyday, household items at the lowest prices. These household items like kitchen appliances, office supplies, toys, clothing etc. are always in demand, because no matter what era it is, these basic items are needed by families and individuals to survive, and do not vary that much. Furthermore, Walmart’s philosophy of selling products at the lowest possible prices will always be appreciated by customers, as saving money is certainly an interest of the working class families that make up the majority of the population. Using this method, Walmart became incredibly successful, making billions of dollars of revenue every year, and spreading to multiple countries around. In this case, Walmart has been using its successful business model for decades, but it will not fail because the products it sells and its philosophy will probably never become unpopular.

Overall, whether or not using a successful business method for too long leads to failure depends on if the industry within which the business is operating is fast-changing or fairly stable. The field of science and technology is incredibly fast moving, and demands are consistently changing with new advancements. For a company to function within such a dynamic industry, it must be flexible, and adapt its business methods to match the demands of customers and investors. Nortel continued using their old business model, which was successful during the telecommunications boom but inefficient after, instead of adapting their spending and product production to match rest of the industry’s demands. This eventually led to their failure and bankruptcy. However, Walmart, a company that has been utilizing the same model for decades, is still very successful because its industry is affordable household items, and demand for them will remain consistent, as people’s everyday needs do not change nearly as quickly as the field of technology. For that reason, Walmart is able to keep utilizing its method of conducting business for many years, and remain one of the most successful companies in the world.

In business, using a successful method for too long may lead to failure

Describe a specific situation in which continuing to use a successful method might not lead to failure. Discuss what you think determines when using a successful business method for too long leads to failure.

In most of the world, businesses are driven by a desire to produce goods and services that are desirable to consumers in order to receive the greatest profit. Profit is deemed to be the greatest determinant of success and thus, a lack of profit is considered a failure. To ensure success, businesses may attempt use various methods at different levels of business, including production, marketing and distribution. Once a business selects a method that is successful, they should not use it for an extensive length of time, as it may lead to failure. Consider the method of reaching customers used by Eaton's, a large department store that formerly existed across Canada. Eaton's chose to provide customers a large variety of goods in one store, including clothing, fragrances, home appliances and more. Although Eaton's provided customers with a wide range of products, it did not specialize in any of them. This method proved successful at first, because there was a limited range of other stores for customers to choose from. Furthermore, it was convenient for customers to find goods to meet many of their needs in one location. However, as competitor stores became available to customers, this method ultimately led to Eatons' failure. Customers began selecting other stores that specialized in a particular good that they desired. In the the late 1990's Eaton's closed all of its stores. If Eaton's had recognized the presence of competitors and changed their methods of reaching customer, they would have been more successfully. Although Eaton's method was successful at first, it led to failure because they used it for too long.

While it appears that using a successful method for too long may lead to failure, this is not always the case. At times, using a method that has been proven successful may continue to be successfully in the future. If a business selects a method in market that lacks competitors, they will not need to change their methods to remain successful. Consider the case of the company BC Hydro, which provides water the province of British Columbia. BC Hydro has selected a successful method to deliver water that includes, purification, transportation and distribution. The methods used by the company are successful because the BC Hydro continues to earn a profit. Because BC Hydro is the only company in the province of British Columbia to deliver water, it does not need to change its method to prevent customers from choosing a competitor. In this case, a successful method will not lead to failure because customers will not select another company.

It is evident using a successful method for an extended period of time will not always lead to failure. What determines if a company should change a method to prevent failure is whether or not there are competitors that offer the same or similar goods. In the case of Eaton's, providing a range of goods to customers, but not specializing in a particular good proved successful at first, but ultimately led to failure and closing of all Eaton's store. Eaton's method was no longer successful because competitors existed in the market. However, in the case of BC Hydro, a successful method did not lead to failure because they are the only company to provide such a service. Because customers do not have the option to choose a competitors, using a successful method for an extended period of time will not lead to failure. Therefore, one must examine the competitors that exist in a market to determine if using a successful method for too long will lead to failure.

In business, using a successful method for too long may lead to failure

Describe a specific situation in which continuing to use a successful method might not lead to failure. Discuss what you think determines when using a successful business method for too long leads to failure.

The aim of a business is to be profitable and thus they try to find methods to ensure their success. However, continuing to use the same successful approach may lead to failure. For instance, Research in Motion is a company that has steadfastly maintained its approach to cell phones. The company focuses on convenient keyboards, secure messaging and emailing. Furthermore, they created the popular form of messaging “Blackberry Messenger” or “BBM.” This approach resulted in RIM being a leader in technology for many years; however, the company now is unable to compete with competitors such as Apple who bring new and innovative ideas to the table. RIM’s stocks are now at an all time low and it appears as if the company will be unable to return to its former glory if it continues to maintain its earlier approach to business. The Blackberry 10’s release date has been postponed and appears as if RIM will be continuing to use their former approach to manufacturing cell phones and will be focusing on improving the same things that brought RIM success earlier on. This approach will not be successful for RIM, as their stock continues to plummet and blackberry users switch to other smartphones like Androids and Iphones that continue to push boundaries on what a smartphone constitutes.

On the other hand, some businesses may be successful using the same method that they have earlier applied. For example, Tim Hortons is a chain fast-food restaurant that has focused on being affordable and convenient. Furthermore, Tim Hortons’ food does not appear to be as unhealthy as other fast-food chains like McDonalds and Burger King. Tim Hortons’ food is relatively simple, with a focus on donuts, coffee and cheap sandwiches. By maintaining the same approach, Tim Hortons has maintained and acquired a wide customer base because their affordability and convenience attracts the average consumer. Altering their method may alienate current consumers who enjoy the convenience, affordability and decent food that the chain currently offers. Tim Hortons’ marketing method has been successful among consumers and it appears that, as they continue to use the same method, they will continue to have a wide consumer base and success in the market.

Whether or not a business should use the same method or alter the method depends on the product being produced. Technology is always altering and improving, and in order to keep up with competitors, companies dealing with technology must continue to innovate if they wish to keep their consumer base. RIM’s focus on the earlier things that made them innovative may now lead to their failure because they are not providing the innovation that other companies provide. However, in the situation of restaurants, each successful restaurant builds up a consumer base based on qualities that the restaurant offers. Tim Hortons’ stance on being affordable and convenient attracts a specific kind of customer and altering that make-up may in fact cause problems for the restaurant. Its dependability is what keeps the business successful. Finally, fast-food is not a quickly altering environment. The purpose of fast food is to be convenient and affordable and thus, shifting from that approach would cause problems for the business. Therefore, it depends on whether or not the business is producing products in a quickly shifting environment or if the business is competing in a steady environment where good qualities of a business remain rather constant.

Thank you for marking this :)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In today's market, innovation is required for a company to excel and creativity is needed for a product such as, computer and mobile phone to attract more consumers. Thus, in business long term success cannot be achieved without added new elements to a company's current marketing plan. Take the once popular blackberry mobile phone as an example. Blackberry was one of the first smart phone appeared in the mobile phone market and it was super popular for the past few years. However, apple and Google products have recently catched up with the popularity of blackberry, and blackberry is slowly been replaced by it's competitors. With the lack of innovation, blackberry will soon loss all of it's users to other smart phones, which has better browser and better system. Thus, having the same product for too long without much innovation may lead to loss of consumers, since the marketing is always renewing.

On the other hand, certain selling strategies always have effects on promotion of products. For example, Tim Hortons with beverages, especially coffee as it's main selling product have been using a method called "roller up" for many years, and has never fail to attract more buyers. "Roller up" is when one buy a cup of coffee from Tim Hortons, and one can roll up the edge of the coffee cup for a chance to win a prize such as, coffee, computer, or even a car. This promotion method gives the consumers a feeling of excitation and has attracted a lot of consumers into buying Tim Hortons' coffee. This method has been used by the Tim Hortons' company almost every winter since it ever came out.

Therefore, whether a once successful marketing method will continue to serve it's purpose, depends on if the method is involved in a market related to technology or not. In markets that involve technologies, innovations are required for a once successful method or a once popular product to continue to attract consumers, because the market itself is ever-renewing. A product without much new elements such as, the blackberry smart phone, would soon be defeated by it's competitors. However, in markets that technologies are not involved such as, Tim Horotons, the same marketing strategies may continue to serve their purposes for a longer period of time, because there is little variations within the markets.

In business, owners want to mamximize their profit by using a sucessful method. A method is the plan of how to run the business. Nonetheless, businesses that use a succesful method for too long may run into failure (i.e. decrease in sales). For example, Research in Motion (RIM) created the blackberry, which is a mobile device that offers a number of features to users for their convenience, such as bbm. Their blackberry product was the best selling phone at one point and was a major competitor for the iphone. However, as years went buy and RIM chose to stick to the same successful method for the blackberry, sales started to drop. That is, RIM did not upgrade the phone enough to keep up with the new models of the iphone. Sales have decreased so much for RIM that they had to cut back over 100,000 jobs. Consumers even speculate that blackberries may become extinct some day since the iphone appears to be much more favoured than the blackberry. If RIM had chosen to change up their succesful method of their phone, they could have remained competitive in the cell phone market, but they stuck with the same method and did not upgrade their phone signficantly to the consumers liking. Therefore, using a sucessful method in business for too long usually can lead to failure.

However, continuing to use a sucessful mehthod might not lead to failure in some cases. For example, Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook, a social networking interface, and has continued to use the same sucessful method for his product; he kept on allowing users to use Facebook for free and kept the same features available for individuals. For instance, the wall feature of facebook and the like button has always been a feature of facebook and people really like using these features on facebook. If Mark decided to charge users for using facebook, his buisiness probably would have seen decrease in profits from advertisers that pay facebook for allowing to post their ads on facebook. People would less like use facebook if there some sort of fee. So, less people would see the ads, and the advertising companies would probably see decrease in sales from marketing on facebook.

Therefore, what determine whether using sucessuful business method will lead to failure depends if the company has a free element of usage. If the business does not offer any free usage, using the sucessful method for tool ong may lead failure. If the business does offer some free usage for the product, using the sucessful method for too long may not lead to failure. For example, RIM used the same sucessful method too long for their blackberry product, which customers had to buy. They kept on using the features that were similiar to past models and thus eventually faced failure for using the same method for their product. However, Mark kept on using the same successful method for his free social networking service called facebook. This free usage element for customers that Mark continued to use a method did not lead to failure. The free usage actually helped make the company to become even more succesfful as more and more people dedcide to use the free soical networking site.

Thanks Raymond!

Prompt 30 Enviro_4_Medschool

Newspapers became known ?? during the Crimean war because reporters on the front lines were able to get information on the battlefield out to the general populace. This was reported heavily because for the parties involved in the Crimean war there was an interest in the outcomes of the war. Awkward phrasing. Since then a lot of news has focused on subjects the public wants to know or has a right to know because of the potential effects on their daily lives. The introduction involving the Crimean war is out of place. I am not exactly sure why you started the essay with this. Since newspapers are one way we get information about domestic and international affairs there should be, to a certain degree, emphasis on topics that concern the average citizen. Hence, news media should focus on what the public wants to know rather than reporting indiscriminately. A recent example of coverage that people want to know grammar is the Robocall scandal regarding the 2011 Canadian Federal election. The news media made it a mission to follow up on the findings of investigations because there was strong public interest to get to the bottom of the scandal. This made headlines for a couple of weeks because people were concerned about whether democracy was at risk in Canada. While there were several other world events happening at the time, Robocalls for Canadians took precedence because it was inferred that this was what Canadians wanted to know. Hence, if it concerns citizens of a country the news media should report what the public wants to know. This example is excellent. There needs to be more emphasis on why Canadians wanted the media to report on this. Again, the introduction needs improvement.

However, sometimes there are situations where knowing may compromise the goals of a country or the safety of certain citizens. This is off-topic. The American operation in Pakistan to Osama Bin ladin's compound was kept largely classified. While numerous Americans probably would have liked to know about the operation in more detail the reporting on it was restricted. This was because Obama did not want to risk people attempting to make a shrine out of Osama's death. Furthermore, the spot at sea where Osama's body was disposed was not disclosed so that there was no tomb to serve as a rallying point for surviving Taliban members. Perhaps members of Al Quada, the general Middle Eastern population and Americans would have liked to know more information but it was restricted in the hopes of furthering the goals of the United States against Terrorism. The mystique from speculation was considered the better course of action for the safety of everyone rather than full disclosure and news media needed to respect the larger goals of the nation rather than what the public wanted to know.

This example only weakly addresses the refuting task. The refuting task asks "Describe a specific situation in which the news media might report something other than what the public wants to know." You want an example where the media reports on something that the public might not want to know.

What news media should and should not cover is a tricky question. This is not what the resolution task is interested in. The issue is when should media report news that citizens want to know and when should it report news that citizens do not want to know. Citizens should influence what the media reports because they have a right to know about various affairs, especially ones that concern them directly, and their wants should act as a filter on what the media should focus reporting on. However, if the information may thwart the overall goals of the nation then there may be justification in restricting coverage. Whether the media should only report on what the public wants to know depends on whether the information should be kept classified in the interests of the country. This is vague and ambiguous. You want a resolution principle that is clear and easy to apply. For example, someone could argue that keeping the robocall scandal classified might be in the interest of the stability of the country. Citizens of Canada had a right to know what was happening surrounding the Robocall controversy because it threatened the integrity of electoral system. Thus, the media should have kept reporting on the results of the investigation. Conversely, the operation to Osama's compound contained many sensitive details regarding the war against the Taliban and while the public might have wanted to know the details there was prudence in allowing most of the operation to be left to speculation. This was done probably to protect the US from litigation as well as to prevent a congregation of supporters to rally around Osama's death. So in situations where the information should be kept classified for security purposes the media should not report what the public wants to know. On a last note, it is entirely possible that more information will be released in the future regarding that operation when the threat from Terrorism is not considered a threat to national security.

The misinterpretation of the prompt also affects your resolution paragraph here.

I can see how the prompt may be misinterpreted and this is a common mistake. You should think of the writing sample as arguing two opposite positions. If the supporting task is: The news media should report only what the public wants to know. Then you can think of the refuting task as the opposite: The news media should not report only what the public wants to know.

Prompt 30 tms

In modern societies, news media in the form of television news channels play a crucial role in bringing information on current events to a vast number of individuals. News media can relay information regarding politics, economics, crime, humanitarian efforts, social events, sports, new research discoveries, weather forecasts, traffic news, and consumer reports. Such information can be on a local, provincial, federal or international scale. News media is also a form of a business that gains revenues from various sources including government funding, private sector sponsorships, public donations and advertising. In order to maximuize revenue and sell the service of information delivery, news media should report only what their consumers (i.e. public) wants to hear. This is especially true for news media channels that operate on private funding. Your introduction is a bit too long. Most of the ideas are general and do not directly contribute to addressing the supporting task. Therefore, you should make your introduction more concise. For example, CP24 is a well-known news channel in Ontario that brings mostly local news to the public, 24 hours a day. In addition, it also has some segments on provincial, national and international news throughtout the day. Majority of the revenues grammar for this channel come from the private sector and advertising. In this case, it is important for this channel to report only what the public wants to hear in order to keep them engaged and have a relatively high popularity. This will later ensure continued support from their funding sources and hence, will allow for the overall survival of the channel. Strong.

However, it is not always necessary for news media to report only what the public wants to hear. Good. This is especially true for news media channels that are funded by goverment sources and public donations. In this case, such a channel can be considered as a government-operated channel that does not need to worry about continued support from an external organization, as seen in the case of privately funded news media channels. Moreover, such a news media channel also has an increased responsibility to relay an unbiased account of all current events, whether good or bad. The content and presentation of the information by government-operated channels should not rely on what the public wants to hear. For example, the Canadian Broadcast Cooperation (CBC) is the major news media channel in Canada that is primarily funded by tax dollars and public donations. Journalists and broadcasters working for the CBC have an increased responsibility to deliver information regarding all current events that are taking place in the local, provincial, national and international scales. Since they are being funded by public money, it is their responsibility to bring an unbiased, undistorted account of news “as it is” and “as it happens”, regardless of whether the public wants to hear it or not. This example could be excellent. However, you need to provide a specific account as to when the CBC reports news that the public may not want to know.

Overall, news media plays a major role in bring information grammar regarding current events to a vast majority of individuals in modern societies. The content of the news and the way in which it is delivered can vary from news channel to channel. Such variation is primarily based on the funding source of the channel. This is a strong resolution principle. However, it should be presented in a way that more explicitly addresses the resolution task. It is okay for news media channels that are being funded by advertising revenues and private sector sponsorships to report only what the public wants to hear as it will later ensure continued private sector support and survival of the channel. This was illustrated by the example of CP24, a well-known news media channel that is funded by the private sector. In contrast, it is the responsibility of news media channels that are funded by public sources such as tax dollars and public donations to provide a full account of all events. This is different from the "what the public wants to know theme" of the prompt. This was illustrated by the example of CBC which can be considered as a government-operated news media channel. As such, the presentation of information can greatly vary from channel to channel depending on the source of funding.

Prompt 30 ann2012

With the well developed technology grammar , people in today's society rely on newspaper and other forms of media for keeping track of current events, which may affect their lives. Public is usually grammar concerned with local, national or even international events that may have an effect on their living status word choice or their countries. This public will of knowing the truth grammar (of events happening around the world) puts a force on media to report honestly. How is this point relevant to the supporting task? Thus, media has the responsibility to report on what the public wants to know, which is the true side of incidents been reported grammar . For example, when SARS outbreak grammar happened in Canada in April 2004, the Canadian health institute took immediate actions to control the disease. As same as the Canadian grammar health institute, the Canadian media reported about SARS publicly to the citizens in order to prevent the disease from spreading. As a result, the disease was controlled and the damage to public health was minimized. Thus, public has the right to know about the reality of events that affect their lives, and media has the responsibility to report on certain events truthfully. This example could be good but the execution needs work. I am not sure why you introduce the truth element to the discussion when that is not part of the prompt.

On the other hand, when a nation's security is endanger and it's people need faith to depend upon, then the media may not necessarily report the entire truth to the public. This is different from the theme of the prompt. Take the Canadian government's decision during World War One as an example. When the British allies including Canada, were in an inferior position word choice, the Canadian government reported wining news to it's citizens in order to give people faith in their country. At the same time, the Canadian government enacted the Conscription grammar , in which every man above a certain age must join the war. In the end, the British allies had their final victory. Thus, even though the Canadian media did not report truthfully at that time, but it was for a greater cause and the outcome of that decision can speak for itself. grammar

This example only weakly addresses the refuting task. The refuting task asks "Describe a specific situation in which the news media might report something other than what the public wants to know." You want an example where the media reports on something that the public might not want to know.

Therefore, in time of national crisis such as, Canada during World War One, it is necessary for the media to put certain limitation on the news that are being reported to the citizens. These limitations are there to provide people greater faith in their country and so to bring people protection and courage. However, when a nation's security is not endanger, the public has the right to know about the truth of events, at least within their nation. As said for the example of SARS in Canada grammar , it is the media's responsibility and duty to ensure that the truth of certain incident is being reported to the public. grammar

The misinterpretation of the prompt also affects your resolution paragraph here.

I can see how the prompt may be misinterpreted and this is a common mistake. You should think of the writing sample as arguing two opposite positions. Prompt 30 polarbear89

In our modern world, many people rely on the news media to gain information about local, national and international events. The public wishes to be given unbiased, truthful information by the news media so that they can make informed judgments about current events. Therefore, the news media should report what the public wants to know and make the information available for everyone to access. For instance, during the recent Canadian elections, the news followed all the government parties and their leaders in order to broadcast information about the parties and their policies to the viewers. The public, in face of a national election, wishes to know the stances and policies of all the parties so that they can make an informed judgment. If the news media only provides information on a candidate that their company leaders personally support, the news will result in biases which does not fulfill the general public’s desire to follow the election coverage fully. Furthermore, this would not allow the public to make an informed judgment on Election Day. Thus, it is imperative that the news media should report the information that the public wants to know. Without allowing for this full coverage, the public will be uninformed and will be unable to make appropriate decisions based on the biased information. Strong.

On the other hand, the news media may not wish to report everything to the general public. This is different from the refuting task put forth by the writing prompt. For instance, during a time of national stress, such as a war, the government news channel may be used as a channel for bolstering national support instead of being used as an impartial source of war news. The general public wishes to gain impartial news information however, during the Second World War, the British government used their news medias, such as the radio and the paper, to relay bolstering information to the public. This works. Thus, the news media became a channel for relaying the information the government wants as opposed to the information the public wants to know. The government used these channels to spread news of the victories of the Allied forces instead of providing information of defeats to the public. They also used these channels to spread propaganda on the power ad prestige of the army, which lessened public outcry when people began to be conscripted into the army. The choice of the government to focus their news media on the Allied victories and using their media to propagate the prestige of the army resulted in greater national support during a very trying time in British history. Thus, the news media was used as a positive channel to bolster national cohesiveness and support instead of being a impartial news provider for the public. Excellent.

Therefore, it can be seen that the news media can be used either as an impartial news source for the public or as a channel for the government to influence its population. However, whether or not the news media remains impartial or influenced is dependent on whether or not the altering of the news media provides more national benefit to the public. There are two issues here. 1) This is vague and ambiguous. You want your resolution principle to be clear and easy to apply. More national benefit is not always clear and is an idea that lacks depth. 2)The italicized portion is different from the resolution task that is set out by the writing prompt. For instance, during a national election, biased coverage would leave the public uninformed and thus would negatively influence the public’s decisions, which could harm the country on a national scale. However, during the World War, the public was not in a position to make drastic decisions that would change their country. The country was in the midst of a World War and was, in fact, conscripting for the army. Thus, the public was not in a position to make a nation changing decision. However, the altering of the media resulted in greater national cohesiveness and support, which, overall, resulted in a positive national effect for the public. By using the media to bolster the country’s moral support, the media allowed the devastating effects of the war to be mitigated by the public’s cohesiveness and belief in the Allied forces. Thus, in situations where the public must make a decision based on the news, the news media should provide the information that the public wishes to know. However, when a country is in a situation where the news media can be used to bolster the moral of a country, it may be used so, but only with the purpose of benefiting the nation. The resolution paragraph is the weakest part of your essay. You introduce a number of tangential ideas (biased vs. non-biased and whether the people are in a position to make nation changing decisions) that disrupt clarity. In other words, your argument is not clear and focused.

Prompt 30 sixstar

In today's modern society, the news media plays an important role in communicating information to the general public. Whether it be information about current events or sports, many people rely on the news media to stay informed about the things that interest them. With our fast-paced society, many people also want to obtain information that is directly relevant to their lives in a timely manner. As such, some would argue that in order to appeal to people in today's fast-paced lifestyle, the news media should only report what the public wants to know. Strong opening. This idea of presenting only what the public wants to know is especially apparent in televised news broadcasts. As the air time for these televised broadcasts is limited, the producers of these shows must decide which "news-worthy" stories to present on air. Often, the most important factor in this decision is how the producer feels the public will react to the particular news story. If the news broadcasts audience reacts negatively to a story, or feels that it's not relevant to their lives, they could stop watching that particular news broadcast, thus leading to a loss of revenue for the news media company. As such, news media companies involved in televised news broadcasts spend a significant amount of time researching their target audience and trying to get a better idea of what information the public wants to know. By becoming more informed about the interests and desires of their audience, producers of televised news broadcasts can more confidently choose which stories to air in order to keep their viewers interested in watching their news broadcast. This discussion is okay but is a bit too general and needs more depth.

However, news media may not always report what the public wants to know. For instance, print media, such as local newspapers, often contain many different sections that provide a wide variety of information that may not always be what the public wants to know. One section in particular that often appears in local newspapers is the editorial/opinion section. In this section, reporters and citizens can write articles detailing their views on a particular piece of information. Often times, these views may be controversial and may not appeal to the general public. A recent example of this was when a local newspaper in Alberta, Canada published an editorial about the environmental dangers of the oil sands. This editorial advocated for the provincial government to restrict oil sands development and focus on the environment. As the oil sands are one of Alberta's major industries and employs a significant amount of Albertans, many people were outraged by the article. However, this article spurred a social dialogue amongst the citizens that eventually led to new ideas about oil sands development to be presented to the government. In this case, the news media reported information that the public may not have wanted to know, but it was still important in spurring dialogue amongst citizens, and thus, still an important and relevant article. Strong.

It would seem that whether or not the news media reports only what the public wants to know depends on the medium in which the news is being presented. Televised news media, due to their time limits, can only air a select number of stories, and thus, must decide which stories should air. In order to attract large audiences, and thus increase revenues, the producers of televised news broadcasts must choose stories that would appeal to the general public. As such, in the case of televised news media, it is important for producers to choose stories that report only what the public wants to know. However, in the case of print media, where there are less restrictions on the amount of information that can be presented, the news media might report stories that the public may not want to know. The article in the editorial section of an Albertan newspaper served as a prime example of a case when information may be presented that the general public may not want to know, but was still important in encouraging citizens to discuss and debate the oil sands development and environmental issues presented. Therefore, while most news media will strive to provide information they believe the public wants to know, mediums with less restrictions on the amount of information that they can present are able to report information that may not always be revelant to the general public. Excellent.

Prompt 30 chandlerbing

With technology’s ability to collect and spread knowledge rapidly, the role of news media on society has been analyzed by academicians grammar in several fields. Noam Chomsky often argued that the news pertaining to local or national issues was often presented in a way that matched what the public wanted to know in order to maintain peace throughout the country. The idea is especially seen when countries are at war and the government must keep the nation’s morale high so that soldiers and workers in the country are able continue grammar operating at an optimum level word choice. For example, in World War I, the Canadian government enacted Conscription, forcing all men above a certain age to fight the war in Europe. The women who stayed at home were worried about their loved ones and required their anxiety to be alleviated. The government, in response, often had posters that depicted soldiers “ducking and covering” from enemy artillery symbolizing that their loved ones would be safe from even the most dangerous enemy threats. These types of posters gave the women of the country a sense of equanimity in the midst of chaos and therefore, the media, by providing the women with information they sought regarding the soldiers’ safety, was able to reduce the panic in wartime Canada. This example is great but the strength of the argument needs to be improved. In other words, the discussion needs to be more convincing.

On the other hand, there are times when the media has been useful in propagating ideas or views that are directly opposite of what the public wants to know. For example, in Quebec, there is an ongoing large scale student protest against the government’s unilateral decision to increase university tuition by $1625 over 5 years. Throughout Canada, university students believed that the Quebec students were justified in protesting against the government and hoped that they would be successful as it would set a precedent for future rallies. However, instead of the news media only printing information supporting the protest, several prominent news sites such as The Economist and The Globe and Mail published articles claiming that the Quebec students were unjustified in their protests as Quebec already enjoyed the lowest university tuition fees in all of Canada. Hence, the news media provided information opposing the sentiments of the general university student public in order to give the nation a more balanced view of the issue at hand. Strong.

It is clear that the media has a central role in influencing the mood of a country and this relationship between public mood and media has led many to believe that media should only present news that the people are interested in. This is a not a balanced introductory sentence for the resolution paragraph. This is especially true when countries are at war and the public, looking for hope, should be appeased by the news media in order to maintain stability and calmness throughout the country. However, when a country is experiencing an era of peace, news media should attempt to provide information that gratifies and contradicts public sentiments. This doesn't make sense. In the case of Canada during World War I, propagation of advertisements that helped alleviate the women’s grammar concerns regarding their loved one’s (soldiers') safety prevented widespread panic and in fact, inspired the women to help manufacture artillery that could be used to further support their husbands and fathers at war. However, as Canada currently enjoys peace, the news media is able to provide information on the Quebec tuition fee protests that is exactly opposite of what the public would like to hear This only applies to a small part of the public. without risking the country’s stability as would be the case in war-time. Moreover, this more balanced media portrayal that encompasses what the public wants to and does not want to hear will allow citizens to develop a more informed opinion on how just the government’s decision to increase tuition fees is. This could be strong. However there are a few issues. The organization of ideas needs improvement. You introduce some ideas at the beginning of the paragraph that need to be integrated with the discussion of the examples. Furthermore, you apply your resolution principle well to your supporting example but the application to the refuting example needs improvement.

Prompt 30 perspectives

The news media is responsible for informing citizens of the myriad of affairs that take place on this planet. However, some of these events may result in adverse reactions and therefore the media often only reports what the public wants to know. In a sense, the media is controlling the amount of information available in order to influence the behaviors and emotions of the public, which may help to maintain stability in a nation. For example, during the time when the United States of America was engaged in the Cold War against Russia, the news media may have withheld crucial information in order to prevent the citizens of each nations from panicking. They would only report what the public wanted to know, such as reassurances of public safety, and that the situation was under control. These reports helped to control the public by only revealing what the public wanted to hear, and may have prevent chaos grammar and bloodshed before any military action between Russia and United states even broke out. Strong.

However, there are instances were the news media should report stories despite being disliked by the public. A specific example of such a case is the recent stories of killer Luka Rocco, who murdered and disassembled the body of a previous lover. Luka Rocco had disassembled word choice the body of the victim, and mailed them to various locations across Canada. Despite the stories being gruesome, and horrifying, the public had a right to know of the event. Many people would not want to know of such an event as it does not directly affect them, but it may be important for the identification of the victim, the killer and to the unsuspecting recipients of the disassembled body parts. Publicizing such a story will serve to protect citizens and hinder future similar events. Strong.

The news media has a responsibility to report events that are both pleasant and unpleasant to the public. This is different from the writing prompt. Whether or not the media should report events that the public wants to know is contingent on national safety. This is vague and ambiguous. You want your resolution principle to be clear and easy to apply. Certain information once released can have devastating effects on the psyche of a nation, and may lead to anarchy. As seen in the Cold War, information that the public wanted to know may have been reported in order to prevent citizens from feeling vulnerable and unsafe. If citizens of an entire nation felt strongly about being endangered, they may have resorted to violence and theft in order to protect themselves and prepare for the gloomy times ahead. In the events that took place due to Luka Rocca's actions, the citizens had a right to know of such a story and it does not lead to uncertainty about the future of a nation. Citizens will still feel safe in their own homes as this single incident does not pertain to national safety. Therefore, it is evident that there are times when the media should report only what the public wants to know and others when they should not.

The problem with this discussion is that you do not separate/resolve your two examples using your resolution principle. In one case, national safety is at stake so media should report what the public wants to know. In the other case, national safety is also at stake so media should report on the story even though the public may not want to know about the gruesome murder. Your argument that Luka Rocca did not pose a threat to national safety is questionable. He was a killer on the lose and there was a national man hunt instituted.

Prompt 30 ZiranMeng

The news media carries considerable clout in many societies. It is the bearer of information, and from the old adage "information is power", one can obviously see its importance. Often, the news media will cater to the desires of the general public, exemplifying the "give 'em what they want" attitude. This involves news articles having content that are applicable to an average person's day to day life rather than overwhelming the reader with a slew of information that has zero practicality. The extended coverage of the '08 election had a direct bearing on the lives of the average American. It was a watershed moment; a man of African American descent was on the cusp of presidency. It was unprecedented; it gave millions upon millions of individuals hope that there will be change, that they will not always be mired in complacency, and that the nation will be stepping forward beyond its racist past. Such information is both applicable and desired by the public. Your discussion started out very strong. However, the discussion fizzled because of a lack of elaboration and further development of the example.

However, there are times when the news media should deliver information that isn't exactly aligned with the wants of the public. Often these are news stories that the average individual may consider to be "boring" or "uninspiring". The recent affirmation of the existence of the Higgs boson may not seem interesting to many, and acquisition of this knowledge most likely won't change many lives. None the less, it was reported by many news agencies. The reason for this is that it was such a ground breaking discovery in the field of particle physics-- however, esoteric the field may be-- not reporting on the discovery would result in a loss of credibility. Decent. The discussion still feels sparse.

Frequently, the news media is involved in a balancing act between catering to the public and maintaining its credibility. This is different from the resolution task. Whether or not the media should report an event then depends on the contribution of the event to its ratings. Delivering what the public wants will contribute to increased viewership and ratings; this seems pretty straightforward. How does reporting on something so esoteric like the Higgs boson contribute to ratings? It's true that only a small portion of individuals will be interested in the event, but one cannot overlook the effect of credibility on a news media's viewership. If the public deems a news agency as devoid of credibility, then it might stop following that agency, considering it a waste of their time. Thus, there are times when the news media will report something that may seem contrary to the general public's desire.

Your resolution discussion is the weakest part of your essay. You do not have a resolution principle that creates a clear distinction between your two examples. Your paragraph is also structured in a less than optimal manner. Try following the standard template for the resolution paragraph.

Prompt 30 souljaboy

The news media is the most important source of information for the majority of the people in the world. However, they still need to be able to sustain themselves financially because they are still a business first and foremost. Every major news source, whether TV, internet, or newspaper, are dependent on having the biggest audience possible in order to be profitable. To be able to catch the public's attention, the news media must spend all their time on reporting what the public would want to learn about in order to be profitable. Television news would always focus on something that they believe the public would want to know about rather than something that nobody cares about, even if it is important. Because they are a business, the news media should cater to what their consumers want, which is why they must focus on reporting only what the public wants to know. This discussion is okay. However, it is too general and therefore lacks depth. Your wording is also too absolute. Even though the prompt is extreme in its wording, one of your tasks is to moderate the language or else your refuting argument becomes undermined.

When the news media is free from the need to be financially profitable, they are able to focus on reporting anything they want. In North Korea, the only television source of news is from the state owned broadcast. They are free from the need to cater to what the audience wants because they are not reliant large audience grammar sizes for profit. Therefore, they are able to broadcast propoganda and pointless news. For the most parts, the public does not care about the constant propoganda on TV, but since the news source only relies on the government for financial support, they can continue to report on anything they want without regards for the public's opinion. Strong. More elaboration and development of the example would be desirable.

Whether the news media should report on only what the public wants to know is dependent on if the media is operating as a business. The majority of western media are privately owned and must operate with the goal of financial profit, which can only be achieved by reporting what the public wants to know in order to gain the greatest audience numbers. When the media is funded by another source like the government and does not operate as a business, then they are able to broadcast anything they want without regards for the public. They do not have any worries about making a profit. Media free from financial obligations are very rare, so most media sources must still cater to what the public wants to know. Strong. It would have been excellent if you had applied your resolution principle to your refuting example but you did not.
