NP program turned into doctorate program!?

Hi fellow nurses/student nurses,

I was doing some research on the NP program in USA and it has now turned into a doctorate of nursing practice program(DNP) instead of a masters! This now means that after BsCN, we have to do a masters, and then apply to the doctorate program. I know in Canada before you enter the NP program you must have at least 2 years of work experience first, but I was planning on going to the states for this instead. Guess I can't anymore! Anyone's thoughts or opinions?

Is that across USA or just some programs? That is pretty wild and I daresay kinda ridiculous.. I don't really see why you would need so much grad school to be an NP. Generally grad school is very academic and research-based, whereas being an NP is very clinical. Of course many NPs do research but for the most part it's about having the assessment skills, communication skills, applied knowledge, etc. Should be more of a professional school program IMO
