Did they increase the average for course-based Masters?

It seems as though U of T increased the average expected of course-based Masters applicants. From their website:

"6) Will I be at a disadvantage if I am in a course-based graduate program where I have no publications?

No. More weight will be placed on the course marks. Generally, an A average in graduate courses is considered competitive. Students are still required to send a CV, an up-to-date transcript (if applicable), and the additional letters of reference."

Does anyone know how strict this is? Does it mean that if you have an A- grad average you're out of the running? This really caught me off guard, as everyone on here seems to say an overall A- average is competitive.

A- alone definitely not competitive. If I have A- average, I cannot even do a PhD in my program, let alone compete for medicine.

PS: A- with tonnes of publications will help...

Well, I'm not sure when they're going to use the marks to consider you for the program since most grades aren't in until late December. I'm currently in 3 courses and 1 is on-going for the entire year so I'll only have marks for 2 courses. This will probably work in my favour but I can't send them my transcript until the grades are physically in. And the grad supplemental package was due on Dec.7th. They said in the package to send transcripts as soon as they are available but I'm also wondering if there's a deadline for that.

Many unanswered questions!

EDIT: Just read that they let grad students know if they get an interview last. But still, if you just started a course-based masters then only your first semesters marks will be considered.

this is pretty subjective.

Toronto knows that some graduate schools just hand out A's (ex: PI in waterloo) so students have better shots at scholarships. On the other hand, some graduate programs aim so that only exceptional students land in the A range.

I don't think having an A- will have a major impact on your application all things considered.

So, wait...what constitutes a competitive cumulative GPA for a course-based Masters? Would it be around 3.8-3.9? Because I know at some schools an A = 4.0.

The truth is: no one knows exactly what marks would constitute a competitive gpa. U of T estimates that an A average is competitive based on applications that they have received in the past from course-based masters students.

Just do your best, and hope for the best!
