Hi,

Is there anyone who's a member of Golden Key International Honour Society?

Is it worth it to join?

The name of this organization - it almost sounds made up, like someone was trying to cram the maximum number of ego boosting words into a title(?)

What is it that they are supposed to do?

Uhm I don't know about the people above but they do provide a number of opportunities if you're willing to take advantage of them:

- scholarschips - any member across the world can apply

- chapter scholarships - the chapter at my school provides 3 scholarships just to the members at that university (but you have to be an active member of the club to be able to have a chance of getting them)

- discounts (including TPR prep courses - I wasn't able to use this discount on top of their sale prize tho)

- also club executive opportunities... the club is very active at my university

- and it def looks and sounds good on the resume

I haven't taken advantage of most of these opportunties except for the last one so for me it wasn't really worth it. If you're planning to get involved in this club, then its def worth it. You do get a lot of spam from them tho...

When you get nominated to join their society based on marks, how exactly do they get access to your marks?

Along with their letter, I also got a letter from the President of my university congratulating me :D ... So yeah, the university is probably involved.

They send you this letter to try to make you feel special or unique or w/e, but in reality they send it to everyone, and ask for a fee. To me it looks like an obvious scam, but I could be wrong. Personally, I would not join it.

I don't why universities support scams like this, but yes it is totally useless. Seeing the common consensus here on the forum, people may think less of you if you list it on your resume/cv.

And who exactly are these people?

I wouldn't go that far. Maybe being invited to GK isn't so special among higher-achieving premeds, but to be invited you have to be in the top certain % of students in your faculty. So I think relatively speaking, getting nominated for membership is a personal achievement. However, after reading the posts on here and the consensus, I feel pretty dumb for getting the membership and not even taking advantage of it. Sounded like a good idea at the time...

I agree, the universities are taken in and give them the GPA information and our addresses that really should be treated confidentially. Some time back when I was invited, I did my own due diligence and seem to recall a disproportionate amount of funding went to their executives in salaries.

Universities nominate top 15% of the class and recommend them to join the society by sending letters on their behalf. They don't get any confidential info unless you sign up and provide the info yourself.

yep, they send us the letter not the university

And the university has no right to share our innformation. The fact that they have the information clearly implies the university supports this organization - which I consider to be a big scam.
