Any statistics on background universities of accepted uoft med applicants?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if there were any statistics or data collected on background universities of successful med school applicants at UofT med?

The reason I'd like to know what kind of undergraduate/graduate universities the accepted med applicants come from is because it gives me a better indicator of what kind of schools they come from and what they are able to achieve in terms of gpas, research, etc.

I haven't heard of accepted uoft med school applicants with background degree from a uoft campus. I see a lot of people accepted with degrees from outside uoft like york, mcmasters. Should I be worried?

During O-week they gave us stats on the undergraduate background of our class (1T6). The stats for the most common universities (of accepted applicants) were: UofT (all campuses), McMaster, Western.

That being said there are people from all over Canada (and the U.S.). Some schools that I know people came from (off the top of my head): UOttawa, Queens, Dalhousie, UBC, McGill, UCalgary, YorkU.

So close large universities hold the majority of people who accepted going to the school. Not exactly surprising :)

I don't know of anyone from Sask specifically, but that doesn't mean their not there. There are a decent # of people from Alberta, that counts as the prairies right ;)

hahah yeah not surprising at all. There was another stat that looked at solely geographic location, and showed that the highest % of (accepted) students are from.... wait for it ...... the GTA (big surprise)

I would agree with the sentiment that majority of those who got into U of T med did not do their undergrad at U of T. However, there are a lot of diversity with where people come from with their previous educations. However, like what ACHQ have said, many who have done their degree else where were originally from the GTA.

Actually most of the first year class at U of T med is from U of T. Again that could just be due to the fact that they also have the biggest number of applicants. Its not surprise that McMaster is in second because of there HSc program designed to pump out med applicants.

If you count only undergrad I think they said it was about ~ 60 people, so not majority, but it was definitely the highest # for any given undergrad institution.

U of T also has one of the largest undergraduate life-science student population and definitely the largest undergraduate student population in a single institution. So it is definitely most unfair to compare only absolute numbers. Rather, we should be comparing proportion of successful applicants.

I was surprised a large number were from UofT.... it went against my thinking that UofT is a dream killer for med school GPAs...

One common theme I found amongst most applicant's backgrounds is that most had a: high degree of kickassyness, good sense of humour, impeccable style (a la Fresh_Underwear) and constant cravings for all you can eat sushi.

Now I want to go to U of T even more.

Ok, I might need to ask students from every school if they frequently engage in post-exam sushi (preferably all you can eat). I think that a 'no' as an answer could be a potential deal breaker.

While in undergrad after our final exams were done, we would go to Ten Ichi at sheppard and markham for all you can eat sushi, SO GOOD! I'm craving sushi :(

Also being in downtown Toronto gives you the chance to try out the best Sushi places (among other amazing food joints)

I think Ten ichi is the best place in Scarborough for sushi, definitely missing it.
